Excel as External Data Provider

Hi,

I created a Excel file in Exccel 2007 and trying to use it as External Source to create report in Web Intelligence Rich Client in XI 3.0, I am getting the error when I try to browse the file.

"Unable to create or update Excel Personal Data provider : Cannot Open the workbook (WIS 10872), But when i tried to do the same using Desk top Intelligence it works fine.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Baazi

Because, personal data provider is not supported in Web-I.

Edit: Thanks Marek. Also I checked with the ā€˜What is New guide’. Personal data providers is supported. Sorry for my wrong information. It was true before this release.

Are you sure about this statement when it comes to WebI Rich Client in BO XI 3.0 :?:

You can use Excel as personal data provider, but not Excel 2007 (.xlsx)

What does this means? Can’t we save Excel 2007 as extension (.xls)?

Of course you can save a Excel 2007 .xlsx file as an Excel 2003 .xls file.

jemstar :ireland: (BOB member since 2006-03-30)

That means Excel 2007 xlsx can be used as a data provider. This is what I wanted to confirm.

An Excel 2007 .xlsx file cannot be used as a data source, but a .xls file created by Excel 2007 can be used as a data source

I :yesnod: to Mak’s suggestion, it’s the best. Also it depends if you want to compare some value or say you want a particular field from Excel, read the below post, may help you -

Hi, guys. New user of BOXI Rich client here. I am running into this issue with using excel as a data provider. I build the query, create the report, refesh etc and everything is running fine. Then all of a sudden I get the message ā€œUnable to create or update Excel Personal Data provider : Cannot Open the workbook (WIS 10872)ā€

Am I missing something or is there a way to fix this. I have not made any changes to the excel file, it is not password protected, has not changed location etc.

Any suggestions are very welcome :?: Oh, it is Excel 2003.

Thanks all

I am running into the same issue and get the ā€œUnable to create or update the Excel personal data provider: an internal error occured. (WIS 10884)ā€ error. I can’t edit or delete the Excel data provider now. If anyone has found a way to edit or delete, please let us know. Thanks!

Hi,

I just ran across this problem. I’m using Webi RC XI 3.1 SP3.

I managed to resolve the problem by removing a sheet that contained a pivot table of data on another sheet.

I was then able to use the .xls spreadsheet in Webi as a PDP.

Cheers,
Chris

That Simply doesn’t make sense at all…BO and it’s weird behaviour :nonod:

I’m having an issue where, when running the report in rich client, I get the Excel data provider information. Yet, when I publish the report to the repository and then run the report, I get the following error:

No data to retrieve in Query 2.

Does anyone know if there’s something i need to set as a configuration on the server side?

TIA

Ray

Hi Ray,

Welcome to BOB!

It sounds like when you run your report from Webi Rich Client that your spreadsheet is available to your PC. But when you publish your report to the repository the spreadsheet is no longer available.

Is your repository on a server that is different to your local machine where you are running Webi RC from?

Can you navigate to the spreadsheet from the server where your repository is located?

Try referencing the spreadsheet using a full UNC path if not already doing so.

Chris

Thanks for the response.

I’ve tried using the fully qualified path to the data provider. The only thing left is to place the file on the database server where the repository is and set the path to the local drive.

I’ll give that a shot and post back.

Thanks again

Hi,

The Doc seems to have set Refresh On Open to true. Putting the Source at a UNC Path may not work always. The file can be put at a pre-defined location on the server to get wid refresh work. For details which you wanted please see the Documentation or Please see post at http://forums.sdn.sap.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9582368#9582368

Hi,

You need not put the file on the server exactly at the same place which you used to create it.

I want to make sure I am hearing the right thing here. You say you CAN use Excel spreadsheet as a Data Source in WEBI?

I didn’t think you can and I have a reporting requirement coming up which this will fulfill.

Thanks.

toscajo (BOB member since 2002-09-04)

Hi Toscajo,

Yes you can use Excel in Webi Rich Client as a datasource in BOE XI 3.1.
