XIr3: Crystal XI & universes as datasources?

I am not certain whether this question belongs in the Crystal XI or Universe forum or maybe neither. It’s really an XIr3 issue - I think.

From the product documentation, you should be able to create a Crystal XI report using a universe as the datasource in an XIr3 implementation. However, I receive the error ‘Service CDZHome not found on server’.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it a user issue or a bug?

Thanks In Advance,
Tiny B.

For anyone who is interested, you cannot use a universe in a XI 3.0 environment as a datasource in a Crystal XIr2 SP2 report. The crystal client must be 2008 to use a XI 3.0 universe as a datasource.

Is this still an issue for you? A senior BO rep said that all versions of Crystal were supported. I too am having this issue. How can they do that? CR2008 is something a client has to purchase - do you know if there are plans to have a Crystal XIR3? Surely they are providing an upgrade path.

thoughts?

Thanks!

No, we have had a few internal delays so we haven’t gotten back to this yet. It’s just not true that all versions of Crystal are supported under BOE XIr3 (the only version BOE XIr3 supports is CRv2008) and neither do they have a history of backwards compatibility. (For example, there were huge differences between v8.5 and v9 that prevented publishing a v8.5 report toa v9 Enterprise environment). When asked for a compatibility matrix for their products, they said they did not have one. They will do whatever they want until the see any of their actions negatively affecting their revenue.

If your client wants to have Crystal reports developed, yes they will need a client crystal developer tool purchased. If you require your CRv2008 reports to utilize universes, why wouldn’t you purchase BOE XIr3? With CR 2008 Server, you would not get the universe builder tools required to build universes. If you are not universe dependent then I would go with the CR 2008 Server. Does that answer your question?

These clients purchased XIR2 Enterprise and 5 seats of Crystal XIR2. Now they are ready to move to XIR3 3.0 - so why doesn’t their Crystal XIR2 move right up? I am being told they now have to pay for the upgrade to CR2008.

The reports work fine that are created in another version but they can’t modify or create new ones against universes.

That I cannot answer, only that there usually is a cost for upgrading the software. If your clients are upset, I would suggest they take this issue directly to their sales account manager (as they are the only ones who can do anything about prices).

Thanks for you input. I have escalated it with them and they keep hearing that it is compatible but no one seems to be able to provide a fix.

Hi–

We’re running in to this error using Crystal 2008 and XI 3.1 – we have request ports set up and 6400 is accessible – I can access the same universe I’m trying unsuccessfully to access via Crystal with no problem using Deski.

Has anyone else encountered this error with Crystal 2008? If so, how did you resolve it?

Thanks,
Amy Miller

Here is the issue behind this situation: when BusinessObjects acquired the Crystal Decisions company in 2003, they (BOBJ) found that the Crystal Enterprise “engine” or platform was better than theirs (BOBJ’s), so they replaced the BOBJ Enterprise platform with Crystal Enterprise.

Yes, various versions of Crystal Reports are backwards compatible, but the issue here is the compatibility between Crystal Reports and the BOBJ Enterprise platform.

Crystal Reports 2008 is version 12 … and BOBJ Enterprise XI Release 3 is version 12.

To run or access a version 12 Universe, you must use a version 12 Crystal Reports.

This has also been true of earlier versions (Release 2 is version 11.5 … and Release 1 is version 11.0).

I have encountered SAP BOBJ staff who do not fully comprehend this.
