We have a new pc that’s running Windows Vista SP1. We’ve just installed Oracle 10g client and successfully tested that SQL plus works connecting to an Oracle database. Installed BOXIR3.1 Deski on the pc. When creating a Free-hand SQL report, we are not able to create and successfully test a new connection to the same Oracle database we successfully connected to with SQL. On a Windows XP pc we’re able to create the connection to the same database without a problem. Any ideas on why XI3.1 Deski on Windows Vista gives us a TNSNAMES error message? Problem with Deski and Vista???
DBD: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
But SQL Plus works fine connecting to the same database on the Vista pc.
Open in text format… Check for the tnsname that you are using to connect to the database. If it doesn’t exist then paste it… if it exists it may be corrupt or probably may be having wrong data. So ask someone who is able to connect or your DBA toprovide you with that TNS details…
Paste it…in that file and save it.
Then restart your oracle service if you have server on you machine … else its ok (in case of client)…
Now go to command prompt and do the tnsping… If it does you can establish you connection else ask your DBA and network guys to do with you . As this then could be a firewall issue.
Been there done that. SQL Plus works fine. It’s just Deski that won’t let me create the connection and gives me the tnsnames error. If the tnsnames.ora was wrong then SQL Plus wouldn’t work. But it does. Weird… I’m wondering if it’s a problem with Deski ???
Not sure why you are getting this… as you can see your error code…
DBD: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
its from oracle and not from BO…
Nope. I even made sure we uninstalled, and removed all traces of Oracle on the pc. Then re-installed just to be sure. Same problem. SQL Plus works fine, but you can’t create a connection to the same database in Deski. This is a brand new pc running Vista SP1. We’ve always been a Windows XP shop. This is our first try with a Vista pc. It’s also my bosses pc. So just a little pressure… Since BO’s giving a TNSNAMES error you’d think SQL Plus wouldn’t connect either, but that’s not the case. It just doesn’t make sense.
I think that should not be a problem as we’ve worked on one of the machine when we were trying to implement BO 3.1.
You can do one more thing… take the backup of your BO repository(in case it has some important data), delet this. Then recreate a space for the BO repository where your CMS and other tables get installed.
And then try to connect. Request you to kindly attach the screenshot of the problem you get so that we can understand your problem better.
Did you resolve this. Seeing the same exact thing on Windows 7 machines. Yeah, yeah - Windows 7 not supported. Deski and other clients still work with other sources. Just Oracle TNS seems to be the issue, here but my Vista WAS working.
I’ll reply to myself. That always works. Found the problem. Had the same issue with TOAD. If you install on the Program Files (x86) default directory, nothing works, bobj wise. Here is the post that remnded me:Installation Tips on Windows 64 Bit OS with Oracle 9i
