Windows Server Upgrade 2008 to 2012 or 2016

We need to upgrade our Window servers to 2012 or 2016 and was wondering if this approach would work?

  1. Create new servers
  2. Install and configure BOE software and add to current cluster without creating services.
  3. Clone services on new server from the one it will be replacing.
  4. Once added and cloned, remove the old servers from the cluster.
  5. Have F5 team add the new server to our F5 Stack and remove the old one.
  6. Repeat this one by one until all servers have been converted.

Thoughts?

As long as your Business Objects version stays the same, I don’t see why this wouldn’t work.

We just completed a move to new hardware ourselves but we didn’t need to change the OS because we were already on Windows Server 2016. It didn’t occur to me to try cloning the old services to the new servers but there were some changes that we wanted to make so that is probably OK. This should certainly limit the down time of your environments, I know it did in our case.
