why is an external target database required with rapid marts

hi.
in all the theory related to rapid marts i’ve been seeing an external target database.my doubt is that if rapid marts can store data in a form that can directly be used to generate reports, why do we need this external target database?

because a RapidMart can not store data. It is just code that loads a DWH schema - somewhere. You have to provide the database the RapidMart should load.
