Which OS is used best for clustering.

We are converting our solaris BO XIR2 server to windows server 2003. The questions I have is in the event we want to cluster the BO servers can we get away with using the Standard edition for windows server or should we use enterprise.

I think the only real reason you would need to go to Enterprise if you had machines with more than 4 gigs of ram. Standard would suffice.

Hi,

What are your SLA with the users ?

what are your site configuration ( only one, user in more than one location,…)

What are the user use of the tool ?

Cheers,
Laurent.

You can do BO XI Clustering with any Windows OS version

You will need Enterprise for more than 4CPU (with limited suport/benefit from BO)
DataCenter is beyond 16CPU and not useful for BO.

What ever you do. I would not recommed to use Windows OS Clustering for the Webi Servers at all.

I think the mgmt has decided to use the 64 bit R2 release of Windows Server 2003. I read that BO will work on 64 bit but any issues that may arise support is only limited to 32 bit issues? Is there any knowlwedge or experience with this.

As for our SLA I am not sure what the mgmt team has put out there. We have multiple clients that access Infoview via http or the internet and view their reports as part of a service that we provide.

I think BO is limited to use 32 bits.

May be just 64bits on some HP Itanium may be…to check.

Can you elaborate why you would not Cluster WebI Report and Job services on a clustered Windows OS environment…?

Nothing in any of the BOBJ materials mentions any issues…

Ok I will elaborate on why I think/know it is a bad idea.

OS Clustering is very complex to implement to start with.

  • Shared storage
  • OS specific redundancy services
  • The cluster will have many Netowrk card, sharing the same IP

Applications running on Clusters.
The software must be written and should be certified to support OS clusters
The same services are running on the same but different server (2CMS, …)
All this can lead to confusions on what the state and priority on the service is.
BO has not written or certified the software for clusters (at least from what I know)

As of today XI is still a 32bit application. You may be able to run it on a 64bit os but you will not get any clear benefits of having BO running there.

If your CPU’s have hyper-threading you may want to disable this feature and test the perfromance of XI/Webi usually it is faster with Hyper-threading off

Cluster applications that work (most of the time)
MS SQL Server
Exchange
and a few other applications.

OK, my confusion was between OS-clustering and BOBJ-clustering…thanks for the detail.

We don’t cluster the OS, we run four (4) separate Windows-2003 servers that host a BOBJ-cluster for BOE-XI (R2) PREMIUM.

I have just set up 2 XIr2 SP2 servers on 64bit - the only issue to date was:
