where do i put my NEW license key?

We installed v6 with the 5 day license key that comes with - but have now recieved our permanent “partner” key (.xml file). i tried putting it in the obvious bo6/license folder, and putting it in the folder i pointed to during the installation - neither seems to work (when i login to any of the tools i still get the “your license expires in X days” message…

where does this thing go and how to i get v6 to recognize that it’s there???

thanks in advance (as always!!!)

It seems to have to be in the same place the temporary key was located.

Check the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Business Objects\Suite 6.0\default\Shared\General\Directories

You should see a “License” entry that gives the location BO looks for the XML file

i love this registry folder - lot’s of good info in here… unfortunately the spot it points to is one where i have the new .xml file (and only that one) but it’s still not “seeing” it… maybe my file is corrupted?

It may sound crazy, but it seems it takes BO a while (??) to “notice” the change in key.
This is my experience, but I have no explanation for it.
The key seems to be cached, and even un-re-installing does not help.
After a while (after putting in the new key), the “ready to expire” message is no longer displayed.
Anybody out there sees a reason for this magic?

exact same thing happened to me… very weird. it kept counting down even after i placed the new key - then when d day came the messages just stopped (and everything still works fine). interesting

It’s because the keys are made to work together (or at least that’s what I’ve been told by BO). You can put your new key in with the old key, and they will work in conjunction, the new one taking over when the old one runs out.

also, you should be able to clear your cache, thus having the new key take effect immediately, but that’s just what is “supposed” to happen.

Yeah, but the funny thing is that I removed the old key completely, even reinstalled from scratch after cleaning the registry and deleting the folders, with the new key only, and it kept giving the message, but for a few hours only, less than a day.

The information must be cached in a hidden place, but I was unable to find where.

I think I found it.
The keys are replicated under (deep breath)

C:\Documents and Settings\NTusername\Application Data\Business Objects\Business Objects 6.0\license

Where NTusername is the NT account you are using.
I have no way of testing it for the moment, but I assume if you delete the old key(s) from there also, the new one(s) should be taken into account immediately.

Hi JF;

I’ve tested this and you are right. I’ve been getting the “your license expires in X days” message until I’ve replaced my temporary key from

C:\Documents and Settings\NTusername\Application Data\Business Objects\Business Objects 6.0\license

Thanks,
