What's possible with HTML5 in SAP Dashboard 4.1/4.2

I’m kinda old fashioned guy, so I’ve alway published my xcelsius dashboards in SWF/Flash format. Mainly because in the old days (4.0) the number HTML5 components where less then SWF components AND (most important) the dashboard in Flash was much more “Flashy”.

But…old fashioned guys don’t live forever… and almost every up-to-date IT-department has set a ban on SWF… so I’m thinking of building my next dashboard with HTML5 components.

So is it possible to get the same level of “flashy-ness” with HTML5 components nowadays in SAP Dashboard 4.1/4.2?

Or is it still rubbish?

(haven’t got my hands on a 4.1/4.2 SAP Dashboard software)

Dashboards(Xcelsius) and HTML5 are not supported for desktop browser consumption, so if thats what your use case is - you’re out of luck with Dashboards. Last time i checked, the HTML5 component was only for the mobile app based viewing compatibility. There have been some hacks etc to get them to work on non-mobile browsers, but its not worth it in my opinion.

Design studio is your best bet here.

so you’re still stuck with Flash? (if you want to display your dashboard on a desktop/laptop environment?)

Yup. Near as I can tell, SAP looked hard at Xcelsius. They tried to figure out how to both make it HTML5 compliant and backwards compatible. They decided that it wasn’t worth the effort.

So they created Design Studio instead. It’s a separate product stream, so they don’t have to worry about compatibility. And it’s HTML5 compliant from the ground up.

Of course, general reports are that it still isn’t a very mature product. So we’ll have to see if it takes off.
