I’m curious what people in other businesses use as naming conventions for coming up with server names (ex. BOPRD1, 1SPBOSRV, etc). Do you pay much mind to it?

In the organisation I work(ed) in, the naming convention was not BO specifical but follow the one of unix or windows server. For unix, they had choosen Pharaoh names, for windows, it is more technical and the server name depend of the location (paris, london, etc…) and the kind of use it is. But, in order to have more friendly names for users, we use alias boxireporting for cms names.

I was working in an International Bank earlier, where BO servers would be named based on few parameters. Its like BO_ E.g : BO_APAC_PAY_PRD . The location would be required only if there would be multiple datacenters across regions.
Another better practice would be synchronising the BO Server name with the naming convention of other servers for the app like, DB,Webserver,Appserver etc…
