Sorry if this has been addressed, but my search attempts found no matches, which surprises me.
We are running BOBJ 4.0, and I have not been able to use the WebI Rich Client beyond Java version 7 update 55. Our Oracle DBA said there was a fairly major security revision, starting with Java version 7 update 60, and that broke a lot of software applications.
When I attempt to run the rich client with the latest Java updates, I get an error message stating “Cannot launch Java Report Panel, please make sure you have installed a Java virtual machine.”
It is our company policy to apply the latest Java updates, so I end up having to uninstall those and reinstalling the 7 update 55 version. I can’t say with 100% certainty, but I believe I also have to have the Java developer kit installed as well.
In addition to this, our company is planning to upgrade all our machines to IE 11 at the end of the month (I’m currently running IE 9). I just tried upgrading to IE 11, and now I get the same Java error, even when I’m running version 7 update 55, so it appears that IE 11 is also not compatible with the WebI Rich Client.
Has anyone else run into these issues, and if so, were you able to find a solution (or at least a work around)? I’m concerned that this may be something isolated to us, since I’m not seeing much information on it when I search online.
I’m guessing that you really mean the browser based Webi.
As far as my understanding goes the JVM is no longer needed for Webi Rich Client, as in previous versions, as it uses its own code rather than the applet.
They expect you to have the latest Java updates, but do not apply the same thinking to their enterprise software, correct ?
Basically neither of those components are supported by 4.0.
You could try IE 11 in compatability mode?
There are a few posts on security, heres one. I doubt the solutions will apply to you as you are running such an old BO version and the error is different, but as a FYI.
I work in LaunchPad, mostly with WebI reports. Typically I just double-click to run them, putting me in the HTML (thin client) report tool. However, if I right-click on a report and select ‘Modify’, it starts the rich client and wants to load Java. Perhaps 4.1 doesn’t require Java, but 4.0 seems to.
Yes, they are kind of hit and miss on that. Right now I have (or should have) the latest version of Java, but I’m still running IE 9 - go figure. I’ve tried IE 11 in compatibility mode, and having it emulate IE 9. Neither works. I’ve also noticed now that IE 11 is cutting off the top two rows of LaunchPad. I lose the rows with the SAP logo, applications dropdown, log off button and search box, as well as the second row with my report tabs.
Hopefully I explained our version correctly, but is BOE 4.0 really that old already? I thought 4.1 was just released last year (perhaps that is old in software terms). We will hopefully be upgrading to 4.1 next year.
Thanks for your help!
Can anyone else running BOE 4.0 tell me what Java release you are on, and what version of IE you are running?
Also, in some of my research, I’m seeing references that 4.0 only supports 32-bit - I’m not entirely sure if that is for browsers, Java or both. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I’m not sure if IE 11 even lets you choose between the 32 and 64 bit versions like IE 9 does (I haven’t used IE 10 so I don’t know about that one).
Terminology getting confused here :).
In both 4.0 and 4.1 you require the Java applet to run the Rich Internet application, invoked via your browser.
There is also a desktop client the Webi Rich Client, this desktop app (seperate install) does not require a Java applet in 4.0 or 4.1.
In fact this may be a viable option for you.
Anything 4.0 or 4.1 Client tool based is a 32 bit application.
As a note, have you tried just letting it sit for a while? I get the same message. But after a minute or so, the Rich application loads up anyway. It’s annoying, and it makes opening a report ridiculously slow. But it does function.
Mine does not. I’ve left it open and it just eventually times out my session. In researching this issue, I remember coming across something about 4.0 splitting the Java install into something like 60 jar files, and WebI having to authenticate each one when the Rich Client is launched. The poster said it adds something like 90 seconds to his startup time - perhaps that’s what you are seeing.
Out of curiosity, what version of Java and IE are you running, and are you on 4.0 or 4.1?
Thanks Mak, this is very helpful. And I even have the 4.0 Client Tools installed on my PC, I just hadn’t launched WebI out of there. This is definitely the better option, for me anyway, as I won’t have to worry about future Java and IE updates.
I also wanted to mention that our Basis team installed BOE 4.0 SP10, patch 1 on our Dev system yesterday, and this has resolved the IE 11 issue we were having with LaunchPad missing the top two rows.
It’s on our list for 2015. We’re a pretty small shop for running SAP, so things move a little slowly. Basis has been working on a major upgrade to most of our modules since May (hopefully done next weekend), so I have to be careful what I ask for. It’s always best to stay on the good side of Basis!
Starting September 9, 2014, out-of-date ActiveX controls will be blocked on computers that have the August Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer (MS14-051) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2976627/.
or a later update applied. If your enterprise has a dependency on outdated versions of Java in the Internet Zone in affected versions of Internet Explorer, you are affected by this change.
Here are some workarounds:
Update Java please note that by updating Java to the latest version, users may need to set the security to Medium in order to run the Java applet.
In the Java configuration within control panel, add the reporting URL as a trusted site.
In the users local internet explorer, add the reporting URL as a trusted site.
JAVA 7 creates an isue after 7.5x too where a missing attribute won’t let JAVA run. We ended up creating a white list of server URLs to keep things running.
