Webi Rich Client Vs Webi

Hi,

I am in a situation where the end users still use Deski. The roadmap is to migrate to develop these reports in Webi at somepoint although after a few discussions we are facing this issue from the end users. Some Deski reports have queries where the data source is a flatfile i.e Excel Doc and despite the workarounds I can think of they like this flexibility. Webi doesnt offer this altho Webi Rich client does. Would this be a good transition i.e using Webi and Webi Rich Client in an attempt to Can Deski?

Regards

Ben

Yes, it could be. Theres a lively Deski vs Webi discussion, here:-

Please note, If you want these documents, in Rich Client, to be refreshable within Infoview, you need to be on 3.1 SP3, minimum.

Ah ok, the only problem I found is the Webi Doc composed from an XLS file wouldnt refresh… does 3.1 SP3 resolve this issue ?

Thanks

Ben

As long as you have SP3 installed and you create the doc in Rich client, you can make an Excel DP refreshable.

Ah so SP3 allows you to

  1. Establish the Disparate Data Source and create the Query i.e Excel in Webi RC
  2. Refresh the DS within the thin Webi environment

Super…

So is this the only reason to use Rich Client over WEBI!?

The ability to bring in Excel spreadsheets as a DP

If you have a lot of Webi users, it may be desirable to have the client doing the work, rather than the server. All depends on your environment.
Rich client also allows offline working.

As a developer RC is far more useful… no timeouts. :yesnod: No more losing your work because you get distracted by a phone call.

Or lunch.

All good points but is there any functional reason that Rich Client is better than Webi or visa versa.

How would you do that? Its not like DESKI where you can log in and then check the ‘Work offline box’.

If you choose ‘standalone’ it blanks out login name so when you try to open up the document it complains about the document being locked.
This can happen if the document was originally created by you. RC has no way of knowing so you will have to save the document for ALL users, right?

It might be just me, but I think the offline/timeout issue is a much lesser concern, as compare to the macros. Most DeskI reports have some sort of macros or VBA that will be impossible to convert.

Correct, to work with the documents in offline mode :).

I guess that depends on how you use the product. In 8 years, I think we’ve only had to resort to macros a handful of times.

If you are still using Full Client or DeskI, you might want to check out this webinar…

When did Deski or Full Client come into this discussion? Originally it was between Rich Client and Webi !
