Variable Database connections

I am using Sybase Open Client 11.1.1 going against Sybase 11 databases and was never able to get @Variable working in the Connection parameters.

After reporting this to Business Objects and going back and forth with a Case engineer about this for 10 days, I have finally received confirmation that this is a known bug and is being fixed in release 4.1.3 due out end of this month.

Even though I am relieved, I wonder why there wasn’t a known bug list available to us or to the engineers which would have saved me all the aggravation. I even have the Bug number for this.

The bug is that @Variable worked for UserID, Password and Servername parameters, but not for Database parameter in the connections dialog.

My request to the BO Engineers is to make available to Clients a list of the known bug list. Either post it on their web site or send it to all their Clients. Having a bug list will in no way stop us from using the product, but to the contrary, it will help us use it more effectively.

… or give us access to their entire database of reported cases. Unfortunately, BusObjs feels that “airing their dirty laundry” is a bad marketing move. I’m trying to get them to give access though a “special, secured channel” …

In meeting with our rep recently, there are plans for BO Americas to give technical support customers access to their “Vantave(?)” system, which I believe is the tech support database.

If I remember correctly, this is planned for 4Q or 1Q 1999 (via the web).
