We are planning to upgrade XI R2 SP 5 to XI 3.1. Need some advice and guidance:
What is the stable version that we can upgrade to XI 3.1 SP2? Are there any other latest service packs or fix packs available?
As part of this upgrade, we are moving to Virtual Servers for production, Are there any known issues? Any recommendations on virtual server sizing and config?
We have a stable clustered BO application architecture for R2 (recommended by Business Objects), Is it recommended to use the same architecture for 3.1 or revise it?
4)Are there any known issues with integration kit for SAP BW?
If any of these questions are already answered in other threads that I might have missed, please let me know.
If you’re talking VMware ESX you should be great. Especially if 3.5+
SAP BW Integration is fine with straight 3.1, but on the BW side you need to be on the right kernels and SPs. If going to 3.1 SP2, but not going to FP 2.1 make sure you install the the HotFix release shortly after SP2 that resolves some universe issues when developing on top of BEX/OLAP.
I don’t know how SP2 or SP2.1 affects SAP Integration.
However, be aware - there are reports of SP2 breaking scheduling/publications in a clustered environment. Haven’t had time to test to see if FP 2.1 resolves these issues. However, even if 2.1 fixes SP2’s problems with clustering, I don’t know if it will have a negative impact on SAP Integration.
Key is if you have access to a dev/test environment – take advantage of testing clustering with SP2 before going to PROD - and if going straight to SP2 FP1, test with SAP Integration.
All in all I would advise that if going to 3.1, hold off on SP2 if clustering until it is proven that FP 2.1 indeed resolves some of the issues with scheduling in a clustered environment. We’ve done a couple SAP Integrations with 3.1 without any issues on the BO side, but have yet to test SAP Integration with SP2 fully.
