Upgrading: 4.2 SP2 Patch2 TO 4.2 SP3 *Issues*

Hi All,

I was just going to install SP3 on my test server which has BI 4.2 SP2 Patch 2 running. As fired it up, i got a message saying: If this installation continues, fixes may be removed from the system. Ensure that you are installing compatible package Anyone has any insight? Thank you.

EDIT: I went ahead with the install and it has been on stuck for 4 hours on the step “Adding Web Intelligence Samples”. I tried to launch CMC while it is still stuck on that and i am able to log in to CMC and do everything.

This just means that the base level of SP3 may not have all of the fixes that have been patched in your SP2 install. I HIGHLY recommend also installing the latest patch for SP3 (they are supposed to be cumulative, so you shouldn’t have to install all of them.) There were some severe memory issues in Webi in the base install of SP3.

Hi Dell,

Hope you are doing well. Thank you for responding.

Just to give you an update on my install, i had to kill the install since it was stuck on “Adding Web Intelligence Samples”. I went ahead and tested the system and everything seems fine. I then thought i should do a reinstall so that i can get a piece of mind by getting a “Successful” message from the installer and as i tried to do a re-install, i got a “Assertion failure” message stating “A fatal error has occurred which casued the installer to quit. Please gather any %TEMP% and installer logs to present to your support personnel.”

Do you think installing the latest patch would assure a successful install?

Thanks again.

You got the error on the “reinstall” because the first install never completed. There are instructions in SAP Note 1691493 that might resolve this for you. SAP Note 2281804 has similar instructions along with screen shots - even though it’s for Lumira Server, it also applies to the BI Platform.

After that is resolved, you could try doing a repair install from the original install files (NOT through Programs and Features in Windows!) or you could go ahead and just install the latest patch (the route I would probably take.)

Why do i seem to follow the route you would probably take?

Thank you Dell, will keep you posted.

Ran into the same issue with the install getting stuck installing the WebI samples when we updated from 4.2 SP02 P03 to 4.2 SP03 in our Prod environment (did not have the issue when we updated test).

This is a known issue that happens on some systems, but not others and they haven’t pin pointed the cause.

For details, see KB 2012439: https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/notes/2012439

The solution is to kill the LCM_CLI process via Task Manager. Once you kill the task, the install picks up and continues as normal… they left that important piece of information out of the article!! We ended up opening an urgent/prod down case to find out what would happen once the task ended. They were supposed to update the article to add that key piece of information, but I see that hasn’t happened.

Hi dtolley,

Just to update you and others on this. I had left this alone since it was on test environment. However, we were just going to upgrade our systems again to SP6 and ran into issues (see my other thread https://bobj-board.org/t/252525 )
I tried attempted to install SP3 again to fix the broken install of SP3 and it stuck again on “Adding web intelligence samples” i then killed some service from the task manager, was not able to find “LCM_CLI” service though, and the installation completed successfully.
