Upgrade Windows Server from 2003 R2 to 2008 R2

Hi

Due to the forthcoming end-of-life of Windows 2003 server my organisation is moving to Windows 2008. We are therefore procuring 3 new 2008 servers for our BOXI installation (test, production and DR).

We are currently on BOXI 3.1 SP6, with LifeCycle Manager 1.0 SP6, SQL Server 2008 as the repository, and intend to keep these versions. My question is, is there a recommended migration strategy to an upgraded server - as things stand I intend to install BOXI from scratch, reimplenent SSO etc and migrate the content from the old repository (via the Import Wizard). This way the existing system will be in no way compromised until we’re ready to switch. Is there a better/preferred way?

Thanks.

You could do that.

Another option is:

  1. Install BO on the new server
  2. Join it to the existing cluster
  3. Shut down all CMSs
  4. Move the FRS and CMS database if necessary
  5. Using CCM on the the old server, remove its SIA
  6. Shut down the old server

Using this method means that it’s mostly seamless to users.

Hi Joe

Thanks for this, I will certainly consider this as it looks like it would save effort in the migration of data.

When you say ‘join to the existing cluster’ (step 2) would this need to be done

  • initially via a custom installation of BOXI 3.1 on the 2008 server ?
  • or could I do a new installation of BOXI 3.1 on the 2008 server and join to the original CMS afterwards using the CCM ?

The latter would be preferable as I wouldn’t be touching the original database until I was sure everything was OK on the new 2008 server. Then the only remamining task would be to move the FRS (as its on the old server)
