Universes from Enterprise to Edge XI R2 (sp2+?)

I have a dev system with BO Enterprise XI R2 SP2. The client was sold (by SAP) a BO Edge XI R2 SP2 system, and BO has assured me that Edge and Enterprise are technologically the same - Edge is just a licensing difference.

Import wizard on the Edge server fails to import the universes, with the error “some user rights could not be imported…”, an error which I have come to associate with a difference in the source and destination server versions when using .biar files. Indeed, the build numbers for three of the the Edge server’s CCM jobs were not 11.5.8.826 but 11.5.8.935, making it appear to be SP2, plus some hot fix. Not just plain old SP2.

I figured that updating both to SP4 would solve this issue, but the SAP support site has no service packs or fixes of any kind listed under BO Edge.

Downloading the Enterprise SP4 patch successfully updated the BO Enterprise system to SP4, but the Edge server refuses to run the patch .exe, saying that Windows can’t find the file after I’ve clicked on it.

Any suggestions on how to migrate Enterprise universe to Edge, or how to update Edge to SP4?

Thanks! (exasperated)

EDGE is always about 6 to 8 months behind Enterprise in releases and service packs.

My guess is that SAP suggested EDGE because the client wanted CONCURRENT licenses, which are not available for Enterprise.

How is your client planning on using EDGE - directly from InfoView / CMC or via a custom-application (Java / .Net SDK)?

Patch support for the XI (R2) products ends in seven (7) months - June 2010 - so if this is all new they may want to look at using XI-3.1 (Enterprise / Edge) instead of R2.

Finally got direct access to their server, and noticed two things right away:

  1. Program folder for BO says “Business Object Crystal Decisions”. Is that normal for an Edge install?
  2. No Desktop Intelligence application available. Is that normal for an Edge install?

SAP support did finally get back to me, suggesting that I use WinRAR to decompress the SP4 patch application and then run it against the Edge system. That step is pending.

status update: was recommended by SAP to run the sp4 Enterprise update on the Edge system by manually dearchiving the .exe with WinRar and then executing. Install appears to run successfully.

Import of universes no longer returns the user rights error, but also fails to import the universes (XI R2 SP4 Enterprise -> XI R2 SP4 Edge). SAP support rep is re-creating the setup now in order to re-create the behavior on his end.

The issue has been resolved.

The problem is from a couple of factors all piled together to cause the behavior seen; namely, moving universes from Enterprise to Edge while the CMS is on MS SQL and after doing a clean Edge install.

Importing the universes from Enterprise to Enterprise on MS SQL worked fine, and moving from Enterprise to a fresh Edge install when the Edge CMS is on MySQL worked fine as well.

In order to get the universes to properly import from Enterprise to Edge on MS SQL, Enterprise must be at the same or a higher version number than Edge, Edge must be installed with MS SQL (or installed w/ MySQL and then changed to MS SQL) configured, the license key re-entered into the CMC’s License area (installer asks for it, but does not appear to save it in the server settings), the ODBC connection to MS SQL server re-created, and the CMS service restarted.

At this time, Import wizard on the Edge server can successfully import the universes.
