Universe Designer won't open BOBJ 4.x

Hi All,

Question about Universe Designer in BOBJ 4.x, and using it on client machines.

Every time I try to open Universe Designer, nothing happens. Nothing pops up- no error message, no failure, just nothing. I don’t have any options about connecting to a CMS- I never get a login screen.

I’ve tried going to the designer.exe location and running from there- nothing. I’ve tried running as administrator- doesn’t help. Every other client tool works- including Information Design Tool, widgets, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas? I’m running a Windows 7 64 bit machine. I’ve tried 4.0 Client Tools (SP4) and 4.1 Client Tools (SP1). I would really appreciate it if someone can help me figure this out.

Thanks,

Mark

Does designer.exe appear within Task Manager? Assuming it does, what happens if you right click on it within the processes tab and alter the priority from Normal to High or Realtime?

Just a remote possibility … you haven’t been using a dual monitor recently have you? That happens to me when I log in from home on a single monitor and I last logged in at work on a dual monitor and designer defaults to the second monitor which I can’t see at home.

Nick,

No- Designer.exe does not show up in task manager- it’s like nothing happens on my computer.

Debbie,
It’s funny that you mention that- I’ve been driven crazy in the past figuring that exact thing out- but unfortunately, that’s not the issue right now.

I know this is incredibly vague- it’s very frustrating that I don’t get any error messages or anything. Thanks for your replies, and if you have any other suggestions my eyes are open!

(It looks like someone else has had the same problem as me as well… https://bobj-board.org/t/197150/1)

Curses. Is there anything recorded in the Event Viewer…or maybe some random BO related logfile?

Hi,

Is it not caused by antivirus/antimalware doing its job? Can you turn off such SW for a moment and try running Designer again?

Just an idea.

Do you have local admin rights? Designer needs to write registery entries when you first launch it

Correct, you will at least need write access to the SAP folder. Check with your IT department that your profile allows this. If you ask someone with local admin rights to log on and you’ll probably find it works.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses.

To answer your questions:

  1. Yes, I am a machine administrator. I’ve tried running Universe Designer by clicking on it, as well as right clicking and “running as administrator”. neither work.

  2. I tried turning off my anti-virus. No luck there as well.

  3. There are no errors recorded in my Event Viewer, and I wasn’t able to find a Universe Designer log file.

I think at this point I might just have to resign myself to the fact that something is corrupted… it is weird that a complete uninstall and reinstall of the client tools didn’t solve this if that was the situation though… (I do have a local install of BOBJ 4.1 Server on this machine as well, so perhaps that corrupted the ability to have Universe Designer? I know Server wasn’t meant to be installed on Win7…)

I appreciate the suggestions everyone- and I’m open to more if you have them!

Thanks,

Mark

Other thing to try is whether the Rich Client and the IDT tools open and run.

There is also a folder that you can and should delete within the C:\SAP Business Objects folder structure. But I’m afraid I have no access to a PC with Designer installed nor to my notes to tell you exactly which one.

Same here.

We have the Problem that the universe design tool 4.1 SP2 is freezing under Windows 8 after klicking on Login. In the taskmanager you can see that the designer.exe process is in the state inactive. After a few minutes the universe design tool responds. BO Server and Client Tools have 4.1. SP2.

I know its an old post but do you have database tool open such as toad etc? I had similar issue and found that TOAD was causing the issue so I had to close TOAD. Now I always start IDT first before TOAD

Hope this helps!

Another issue is that you need to make sure that all client tools are on the same patch version - you cannot, for example, install a later patch of Crystal and then open Rich Client or UDT.

hello! I know this post is old but I’m having a similar problem but to Information Design Tool. It won’t start and it doesn’t have any error message. It won’t appear on Task Manager either. I did everything helpful in this thread (https://archive.sap.com/discussions/thread/3279449) but to no avail.

Hoping for some help.

I still have the issue but like I mentioned earlier in the post, closing outlook and toad works for me. First thing I do in the morning is to open IDT and open other apps.

Try closing outlook, database apps (like TOAD, management studio) and other large apps and start the IDT.

the server is dedicated only to SAP :frowning: RAM has been upgraded to 16GB already from 8GB.

Similar issue in this post (solved in last post of thread).
