Universe Design Tips

I would always get into “CHAOS” whenever i try to start the Universe.
I would like to know what are the key factors should be taken while desiging the universe .

Oh my… if you ask 10 people that question you’re liable get 10 different responses. I’m presuming you’'re new to BusinessObjects in general and Designer specifically. Chaos is not always a bad thing.

IMHO you should start with a good handle of SQL. Wouldn’t hurt to have some data modeling exposure.

You should also have handy the Designer’s Guide – from that you must get familiar with contexts, joins, loops, etc, classes, and object qualification (i.e. dimension, measure, detail).

Finally, practice, test. Practice, test, Practice, test. BOB is an excellent resource.

Welcome to BOB.

As Ron pointed out there are many things to consider. If you are new to Designer, the Designer Guide provided under the Help menu in Designer is an excellent place to start. I also wanted to add - make sure your users are involved from the start. Do not forget that the overall design of the Universe both internally and externally (what the user actually sees - ex. layout of classes and objects)) will play a huge factor in how the end user will utlimately determine the success or failure of it’s deployment.

Go to the top right corner of the screen while in the Designer forum.

Enter the search word “tips” and click go.

Read every topic that comes up until you understand it.

Quite a bit of universe design is experience as much as anything else. Over time you’ll recognize certain situations and understand the solutions available in Designer. 8)

Dave’s being humble. He has a great presentation called the Zen art of Universe Design.

You can download this from the BusinessObjects New York Metro Area User Group (fondly know as BONYMAUG) web site.

http://www.bonymaug.com/next%20mtg.htm

It’s half way down the page.

Hope this helps,

Steve
