universe data error when trying to create a Crystal Report

I am trying to build a report from a universe in Crystal 2008. I am trying to add region to my report but get the error “non-numeric character was found where a numeric was expected”. Region is a string, so I do not know why it is giving me this error. When I connect directly to the table (not via the universe) and add region, I do not get the error. In the universe the region is stored as type character and is a dimension. Does anyone know why I am getting an error?
