The transaction log for database 'BI41_CMS_Prod' is full due

Got reports that users can not log into Business Objects. After re-starting SIA and the server as a whole, issue was not resolved.

Event viewer logs displayed the following

The transaction log for database ‘BI41_CMS_Prod’ is full due to ‘LOG_BACKUP’. . (FWB 00087)

SAP BusinessObjects BI platform CMS: All connections to CMS system database ““BI41_CMS_Prod”” are lost. CMS is entering the ““Waiting For Resources”” state. Reason [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The transaction log for database ‘BI41_CMS_Prod’ is full due to ‘LOG_BACKUP’.

SQL DBA restarted database server and issue was resolved. Were assuming it was a hung job which was requesting more memory but hung. Confused and slumped! Please help!!!

It’s an issue for your DBA to resolve. He should check the application logs, and determine what happened.

On the face of it, I would say that the SQL Server database log file became full, and there was no auto-grow set. SQL Server couldn’t make any room in the log file because the backup was running at the same time.

Thanks for your response! We found the issue.

On the surface, Business Objects was throwing what seemed to be a log full error. However, on the sql side, the logs have been the same size for the past 2 weeks. It looked to be a phantom SPID or in business objects terminology, a runaway job.

A phantom spid on the sql side is a query with no user and no apparent information which generally happens when something hangs. After taking the DB offline and bringing it back on, all connections are killed and the issue was resolved.
