I have a Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition with Data Services XI 3.2 (12.2.2.0). This machine runs client and server without any problems. However, when I use Designer (same version of course) from a different client (in this case Windows Server 2003 R2) I cannot run any job. It says: “The job server you selected is not working”.
But I found the cause already: The client machine was behind a router with NAT, i.e. in its own subnetwork. I don’t see why that causes a problem, because the router should handle this, but apparently it does not do so.
Yes, you’ll have to open/forward a few ports including 3500. Search this forum for VPN connection problems and you should be able to find more details. I don’t know all the ports by heart but we have the same problem when using Designer when working remotely over VPN.
We just develop using Designer and kick off the jobs through the Management Console.
You mention VPN, but the strange thing is that I did not have to open any ports in order to use a remote BODI client to a server over VPN. I always thought that the idea behind NAT is to handles this.
As my client runs on a VMware virtual machine I’ll have to sort out how to open ports for that. The host machine (laptop) actually functions as router towards that subnet.
