System Memory running at 90% (CMS.exe taking lot of memory)

Hi,

We have BOXI 3.1 with 32 bit system running Windows 2008.

Our physical Memory is running at 90% because of CMS.exe. CPU utilization is 7 % only.

Kindly let me know how can I reduce it.

Tomcat.exe is also running at 80% now. Any idea what can be the cause?

We might need more details, like how much RAM does the server have, are you running all services on the one machine, what service pack/fix pack are you on, and most importantly - are the clients noticing any impact from memory being at 80/90% ?

Are they seeing any errors, is anything crashing ?

To build on Hayden_Gill’s comment, high memory usage in Windows 2008 is actually a good thing. RAM is several orders of magnitude faster than disk so Win2k8 will load and cache data in unused RAM to speed up responsiveness. If the memory is needed for something more important, the non-critical stuff is purged to free up space. After all, you bought RAM for it to be used so I wouldn’t worry when the OS does just that.

So, to echo Hayden’s point, is anything breaking?

Hi Hayden and Bob,

User is not having anything crashing and reports are not getting slow down. So we assume its a normal behavior of memory. Thanks a lot for your reply…

Hi
I am seeing similar issues, the OS is Win 2003. We are running XI 3.3.1 and the users are experiencing system slowdown. The CMS is constantly running up to 1.7 Gig or memory usage, their is 16 Gig of ram on the server. I believe the CMS is reaching the max memory it can consume. We are also see Webi servers hitting the max memory allocation, but the system slowdown did not start until the CMS started hitting the max.

Anyone know how to tune the CMS? I am aware of the parm to increase the maxobjectsincache, but not sure this will solve my problem.

Thanks

Dennis

Dennis,

Do you have any errors in the event viewer? If not, you may want to enable tracing on the CMS and Webi report server to see what each process is doing when they approach the 2GB threshold. You can do so without a restart by following the instructions in KB article 1335757. There is also another thread on this board that provides a possible fix for Webi server memory creep with SP3 although I don’t have the link handy.

HI
Two days ago I saw this message
CMS is unstable and will shut down immediately. Reason: System is out of memory.

I have not had that condition occur again since rebooting the servers on that day.

Thanks

Since you haven’t seen a second occurrence, I’ll share with you my favorite sysadmin saying, “1 is not a trend so pretend it didn’t happen.” If you do notice memory usage growing again, I would enable logging to capture the behavior. SAP will ask you to do the same thing if you need to open a ticket.

Did you get a solution for this issue. we see this issue all of a sudden now and the CMS goes into Failed state and have to manually restart the CMS server through SIA.

HI
I never resolved the issue, we are now migrating off of Windows onto Linux, so I have not put any futher effort into this.
