I had a healthy Generic ODBC datasource connection to an SQL Server using a Sybase System 11 Drive software. I changed my laptop and had to upgrade to Sybase 12 and now my Connection test is failing with an
error
BusinessObjects configuration:
Network Layer: ODBC
DBMS Engine: Generic ODBC datasource
DLL: C:\Program Files\business Objects\Data Access 5.0\SQODBC50.DLL
SBO: C:\Program Files\business objects\data Access 5.0\ODBC\ODBC
PRM: C:\Program Files\business objects\data Access 5.0\ODBC\odbc10
RSS: C:\Program Files\business objects\data Access 5.0\ODBC\odbc
Also going Tools/Connections/New Connection there is no sign of Sybase to select even though I seem to have all the elements DS Edit and the rest.
Could anyone prompt with any suggestions what these errors are?
You’re using ODBC rather than native Sybase Open Client? Why not use Open Client instead? You’ll have to be sure it’s installed correctly – and that you have the Sybase data connectivity installed for BusinessObjects – but then it works very well.
Indeed,I have installed the Sybase software outside Buisness Objects and have the following elements from the Start/Programmes/Sybase menu:
Info Maker 6.5 / Power Dynamo 2.0 / Sybase Central / DSedit / OC OS Config Utility…
When trying to ping a clinet created in DSedit I get the following fail message:
“Loaded the Dynamic Link Library NLWNSCK.DLL (C:\Program Files\sybase\OCS-12_0\dll\NLWNSCK.DLL).”
Leaving this. And trying to build an ODBC client I do not see Sybase 12 only something Sybase SQL Anywhere 5.0 (Is this correct) clinets built in this do not test o.k. from Designer returning the errors in my 1st posting.
I wish I could have kept Sybase 11 because then at least the ODBC worked o.k.
Anita, You say have I got installed for Business Objects?
Well I seem to have in Add/Remove Programmes “SybaseConnect.12” 40MB but in the Designer I can only see the same old Drivers ODBC Drivers,OLE DB Providers and Oracle Clients. Nothing for Sybase.
Do I need to do anything extra between installing Sybase 12 and seeing it. Like activate it or similar? I have done the Repair install several times.
We have had issues with the Sybase 12 ODBC driver. We were unable to connect to Win SQL after we had installed them.
There seems to be an issue where if you have registered ODBC drivers - in our case WinSQL - on your machine and then you install Sybase 12 this leads to problems i.e. lack of connection.
This problem also manifests itself if you have Sybase 12 drivers present in your registry and then you register another ODBC driver - e.g. WinSQL.
Either way These drivers have caused a number of problems and we have had to rebuild a number of machines because of them
Defintely there is something wrong. The same ODBC config works well on another laptop where there is only Sybase 11.
I notice in ODBC Data Source Name e Administrator - window
in User Data Sources one clinet I put there for and SQL Server DB I can not Remove it. IT is just stuck there. I have tried to Repair SyabseConnect.12 - has no effect.
We tried most things to resolve the issue. We found that if you registered the Sybase 12 drivers it trashed any ODBC connections on the machine and we also couldn’t connect to Sybase.
Can you still connect to SQL Server…?
As stated before the only way around this is a machine rebuild - and installing drivers in a certain order - it may also be worth looking at the version of MDAC you have installed. Sorry, I can’t help you any further…
Seems Sybase 12 doesn’t like any ODBC competition
Dear flanz_g – I cannot help you with Sybase 12 ODBC drivers – but it sounds like Mak 1 has pointed you into the correct direction.
What I can tell you is that ODBC is ODBC – it is not Sybase Open Client. So – the fact that you have some sort of Open Client middleware on your machine does not automatically mean that you can use Sybase ODBC. As I recall, one needs to install Open Client first, and then a special Sybase ODBC after that.
Next, if you really wanted to use native Sybase Open Client middleware with BusinessObjects – you need the BusinessObjects Data Access pack for Sybase – and this software would not be visible via Add/Remove Programs.
Instead – it would be part of your BusinessObjects configuration – and your license key would need to allow you to install it.
