We have a summary report (ie no details just the groups and totals for each group). The report appears fine, but when we export the data to Excel, we get the detail rather than the summary. What’s up with that?

you are probably exporting data from the data manager window - this way you export the data of dataprovider(s), it means the most detailed data as you get it from database.
If you use BO 6.x then get your grouped data (data in the tables) into Excel via File → Save As → XLS format.
