Starting on Design Studio - Need your inputs

Hi All,

I have got the new assignment on Design Studio. As of now, the information I have is -

We are using Oracle 11 G database and the we are going to use Design Studio to create dashboards…

It would really be very very great if you can through some light how to start with it ? Like do I need to build the universe or directly we can dump the data from database to Excel and on top of it, we can build the Design studio file. As of now, I really don’t know how it works and how I am going to work, but I know this is the best place which can give me some inputs to start my thoughts on building the dashboards on Design studio.

Can someone please guide me if came across this kind of scenario. It would really be helpful to just understand how to start working on Design studio…

There are a number of options, BIWs, QAAWs, possibly Live Office, XML.
They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

To be frank, its a big area, I suggest reading the guide in the 1st instance doing research online, maybe some training…

You question is too general to warrant any specific answers.

Thanks Mak for your response.

I guess I didn’t write properly. One thing for sure we have to use Design studio and we have our database in Oracle. Now we are not sure if we need to build the universe or directly we can go ahead with dashboard creation… I tried finding some information in guide, but couldn’t get much. It seems for design studio you have to create a universe or it works with SAP HANA … again not very sure … :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

It looks like you can only connect to .unx universes, this is also version dependent.

A simple google search yielded these:-

Again thanks Mak for your help… I tried sarching it, but I didn’t get that link, it is really very useful.

And yes , this information is present in guide that it can be connected to .unx.

My concern was like - Xclesuis can be directly be connected to db, is it possible to connect the Design studio to db. But just now I came to know that there is some .Net code written which connects Xcelsius with DB…

Personally, I would go via unx. Custom coding is great but is yet another moving part to maintain, mange during upgrade etc.

Thanks Mak…

My client is going to provide me Design studio 1.1 and I am not sure if we can connect that to .UNV file. I saw that DS 1.2 can be connected to .UNX file and also I tried to find the same information in New guides but not able to understand if it is possible or not?

Please guide me , so that I can request my client to provide me DS 1.2

I guess I have got an answer… DS 1.2 and above supports .UNX file. so DS 1.1 is not going to help if you need to build the dashboard on top of a universe.

Right now I do not have the tool so I am not able to find answers to some questions, can someone please guide me if you have already gone through the DS development -

  1. Does design studio provide the facility of scheduling the dashboard or say output in pdf or ppt format to end users ?

  2. Can I export the Design studio output on BO infoview? So that from there I can schedule the instances for end users.

  3. My ultimate goal is - I am going to build a dashboard and output of that dashboard needs to be bursted to 10 K users depending on the Emp ID.

If someone has worked on Design Studio and have come across this kind of requirement, can you please share your thoughts/inputs.

I have some limited experience with Design Studio but would ask if whod directed you to use it knew its kind of ‘half baked’ when it comes to creating analytics. It works ok when connecting to a UNX and using a query as a source, however, the breadth of components is relatively limited at the moment. It looks promising up I wouldnt consider it production strength yet. Consider the fact that its not just for building analytic content, but also other GUI based stuff, HANA and BW front ends and the like.

In terms of integration, yes you can publish a design studio app to enterprise as long as the correct software is installed server side. As far as your other use case goes with bursting. I would be looking at Webi for that. It`s on the roadmap for Design Studio though, make of that what you will!

I have very limited experience with Design Studio but it is very promising.

As mentioned if your 1st post your database is Oracle then you will need to use DS 1.3, check the documentation on what’s new in DS 1.3
