Some Webi Reports open in PDF in BI Launch pad

Hi Guys,

I’m seeing a strange behavior on BI Launch Pad. When i double click on a report in BI Launch pad, the report opens up in PDF. This is happening only with 2 reports. Rest all reports open correctly in Normal WebI viewing mode as setup in Preferences But when i right click on the report and click on 'View", the report opens correctly.
I tried resetting in the preferences, but it did not work. When i promoted this report to other repositories, its happening there too. And for other users too. Please let me know if someone has faced such issue earlier. I’m not sure if this is one of the bugs of BI 4.0

Hurray i found why this was the issue (well according to SAP it is by design :x )

I found in one of the SAP Note, that when we double click the report in BI Launch Pad, the latest scheduled instance is displayed instead of the default report. I don’t remember the Note number, will post it later.

2 of the reports i was talking about had the PDF report as output in the latest instance. After deleting all the instances i realized that the report is viewing in normal mode.
Otherwise we can right click on the report and then VIEW for general viewing.

I had no idea that by design this is the working. If i remember correctly in XI R2 this was not the case. It might have changed maybe from BI 4.0 :?:

Well I can tell you that in XIR2 this is NOT the behaviour.

In fact, in XIR2 you have the title of the object, which when double clicked takes you to the view document mode as you’d expect.
And there is a seperate link for “View Latest Instance” below the title which will take you directly to the last PDF/Excel created.

It sounds like they did away with the View Latest Instance, and combined the functionality into the Title itself…

I can see how this would be confusing in R4 however since the ‘same action’ results in different outcomes depending on whether it’s scheduled or not… Yet again SAP making UI changes without thinking of the end user. WEBI R4 is a huge UI nightmare as far as I’m concerned.

Has anyone found a way to turn this feature off so double clicking opens the report like it used to?

I’m sure you can change it in Preferences to either open the latest instance or just open the report.

That’s the problem. I’m not seeing any setting in preferences that controls this.

There’s also no setting for it in the master BI Launchpad preferences you set in the CMC for all users as the default. So even if there was one I’d have to have all users change it one-by-one.

Double-clicking??

Yes…and no.

Double-Clicking an object has no different function than Clicking one. With the exception of Folders. Double-clicking a folder selects and expands when used in the navigation menu.
Everywhere else… single click = double click as far as functionality goes.

But… there is an option in the CMC to restore the old functionality.

Navigate to Applications → Web Intelligence → Properties and scroll all the way to the bottom.
There is an entry entitled: “Smart View” with two options to handle how the default behavior works, you can choose either “View Latest Instance” (Default) or “View Object”.

Switch to View Object and you will behave like XIR2/3 versions did.

That did the trick. Thank you!

Does this change also affect Crystal Reports, or only Webi reports? Also, do you have to restart any of the other servers for this to take affect? I’ve updated the setting in my Web Intelligence application but the change hasn’t happened to my crystal reports yet. Thanks so much.

I don’t recall if we restarted any other services, but typically if I’m changing settings, I like to make sure to restart the entire SIA that night just to be sure I don’t find out we have a major issue. If I wait to restart the SIA until say a patch or other server mainenance I have to try to ‘think back’ as to what changes I made might cause the SIA to misbehave.

As far as I’m aware, that setting only affects “Web Intelligence” , hinted by the fact that your changing the settings in the “Web Intelligence” section. But then again this is SAP so I wouldn’t bet money on it.

There doesn’t appear to be a “Smart View” option for Crystal Reports at all. I don’t know if the behaviour can even be changed for that… very strange.
I’d open a ticket with SAP asking the question as it does appear initially to be something that is missing.

Thanks for the reply. I just heard back from SAP. To get this preference for Crystal Reports you have upgrade to BP 4.0 SP5. Really wish I knew this before upgrading to SP4. Ugh. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the update on this being a “BY DESIGN” scenario. If that is the case I wonder what type of curry they are adding to their food… !?

This is what happens when they say the BEST IT people are overseas and there are NO QUALIFIED technical people here in the US. gimme a break

Great fix. Thank you!
Of note, we did not need to restart any servers or the SIA, however, users had to logout of Launch pad for the change to take place.
