SAP to BODS - RFC Connection Vs Transport File Import Clarif

Hi,
I need detail clarification on this connections.
I refered many documents , unable to figureout exactly.

Required Clarification on Types of Connections.
As I knew , there are 2 types of connections :

  1. Importing BODS transport files in to SAP BW/ECC & create the datastore in BODS connecting to SAP server.
  2. RFC Connection.

Types of Tables would be available in SAP Datastores :
Here please mention,
1)Which requires which types of Connections ?
( RFC or just Transport file import ? )
2)Which requires either of connections ?

 SAP ECC:

o Functions
o Hierarchies
o IDOCs
o Tables

 SAP BW Source:

o Functions
o IDOCS
o Open Hub Tables
o Tables

 SAP BW Target:

o Master Transfer Structures
o Transaction Transfer Structures
