Hi Harshavardhan,

The activities involved in production support(BO Admin) would include creating users, creating groups, creating profiles, publication, migration of objects(universe, reports). These would depend upon the request from the client. And most importantly, monitoring the BO servers i.e. all servers are up and running.

Cheers

That last bit has a lot of things packed into it.

First, you should know the BO architecture. Know what the different servers do, and which ones get invoked by different actions.

You should know some basics about networking. You don’t need deep knowledge, just enough to be able to recognize an issue and speak intelligently to the network team.

Similarly, you should know some basics about server maintenance for whichever OS you are using. Know how to monitor services, find log files, identify issues, and speak intelligently to the people who actually administer the servers.

It’s also a good idea to know a bit about databases. If you are using Oracle, know how to edit the tnsnames file. As an admin, you don’t need to know much. But the less you know, the more you’ll really need to be GOOD friends with your DBAs.

Ideally, you should know the common error messages of BO, and how to address each. Some of this is information you can definitely pick up on the job, if you are moving into an admin position for the first time. But if I was doing an interview, there would be at least one question along the lines of “What does the WIS 30270 error message usually mean?” (Answer: Not a damn thing useful.)

I would generally want any admin I worked with to have some solid development experience. I just worry about people who maintain systems without knowing what they actually do. But it’s not a requirement.

I concur with what has already been said, however it sounds like you need to nail down the scope of the “production support guy”.

It may be that universe / report support is required, then of course you need reporting knowledge.

What I’m getting it is the administrator function can mean different things, depending upon which organisation you are engaging with.

Simple answer is “it depends”.

Is it a job you are applying for?
Is it a job that you intend to create?

Different answers to different questions.
