Promotion Manager - best practice?

Hi

We are about to move content från BI4.1 SP5, to BI4.2 SP3. We have to move it, because of a change of platform.

It concerns users, usergroups, folders and the reports, accesslevels and user security.

What is your best practice?

Should we move users and Groups first? We have both Enterprise and SAPauthentication.

Regards

/Björn

It doesn’t really matter what order you use for the migration. But make sure you migrate the users, as opposed to importing them from SAP. You need to make sure that the CUID of each user remains the same in both systems.

Which tool would import verses migrate?
Due to database upgrades I may be forced to upgrade to BI 4.2 from BI 4.1 with over 1K users and 35K reports. Migrating content looks like it might be some long weekends. We would be moving groups of users in phases.

If you take a full snapshot of your server(s), you can do an in-place upgrade of your existing servers from 4.1 to 4.2. That way, you don’t have to migrate anything. And if the install goes bad, you can always restore from the snapshot.

Did you have two side-by-side environments - one with lower version and another with higher version? If so, may I ask which tool you used to migrate content form lower version to higher version?

I have done upgrades from 4.1 to 4.2. And had side by side environments of different versions. The only tool for migration in this case is Promotion Management. And you want to use it from the higher environment, regardless of which way the promotion is being done.
