Personal Data Files

I have a user who is receiving the following message when trying to use a personal data file in Business Objects “There are several tables with that name. Please specify owner in the format ‘owner.table’. (3298).” This message only occurs for some of my users and seems to be machine specific (i.e. it is not user name specific, on some machines I can log in as myself and successfully use personal data files and on other machines I cannot). I have investigated DLL, PRM file, and ODBC driver differences between machines and have found nothing. I called BO tech support and was told they had one previous call with this error message but, all there solution file said was the problem was ‘with the machine config’ but, no specifics.

If anyone has run into this problem, I’d love to hear from you!

Kasey,

I agree with you, this is weird!
If you have already checked the PRM files in the ODBC folder (specifically OWNER and QUALIFIER parameters) from different PC (one that works fine and one having this trouble), the version of BusinessObjects on both PC, the ODBC drivers, the Windows version … There is not a lot of things you can check now!

Is there any new other software you installed on some PC and not others?

If your personal data is a TXT file, what kind of Delimiter do you use? For example, if you use a “,” (comma), you can compare for both kinds of PC the “Regional Settings” from the Control Panel, in the “Number” tab: Decimal symbol, Digit grouping and also (why not?) List separator.

I will be very interested by the evolution of this strange behavior.

My two cents,

Farfadet.

I have an excel spreadsheet that I’m using as a personal datafile. The spreadsheet contains week, division, dept, and sales. I want to bring back just specific weeks and specific divisions. Is there a way to do this like when you are using universes you can use your objects and say object 1 = x etc.

Mike,
That’s what I thought was going to be the answer. I saw the option to select specefic ranges. But before I told them to use that option I wanted to make sure there wasn’t something I was overlooking. In regards to being able to have conditions. Thanks.

Stacy

If you have these entries in a contiguous series of cells where you can specify a range of cells to bring into the Data Provider you won’t be able to put conditions on the spreadsheet import. You can specify a range by cells addresses or by a range name.

However, at last you have found a good reason to use MS Excel! (did I say that!) Edit the file with Excel, delete the records you don’t want and save-as a new file. Feed the new file into your document.

That should make the “sheet heads” happy!

It is possible to build a universe off of an Excel spreadsheet. You have to use the Excel ODBC driver. If you search the archives, I think Luis Gonzalez wrote an article about this a long time ago.

Listers,

I am passing on a question from our Administrator - she has tried various solutions from BO but to no avail…

Installed BusinessObjects version 5.1.2 ZABO on both NT and Win 2000 PCs. The option to choose Personal Data Files as the data source is not available; only Visual Basic Procedure is available. We have tried to install Data Access Pack from BO CD and run the Dataac.exe but without any success. We use Microsoft Office 2000. Any ideas?

This one from the Archive:

Eureka!

If you’ll recall, when we last left our puzzled developers, they were attempting to determine how/why there was no “Personal Data Files” option from within ZABO on particular machines. Well now there may be light at the end of the tunnel!

Examine the following directory on the client machine and look for dao350.dll:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Dao

If dao350.dll does exist, it is likely not registered correctly, run regsvr32 on this file when using a command prompt (navigate to the directory first).

regsvr32 dao350.dll

This will register the .dll within the registry. At this point open Business Objects (ZABO) again. The “Personal Data Files” option should be available when building a new report.

(Note: if dao350.dll does NOT exist, you should try running the Dataac.exe file located on the Business Objects 5.1 CD Disk 1 within "\Vol1\Microsoft\Dataac". This will place the file but MAY not register it with Windows if DAO 3.6 is already loaded on the PC. If this is the case, simply follow the steps above after running dataac.exe.)

And there was much rejoicing.
