PDF and Page Size for Printing

We have a Webi XI R2 report that’s formatted to print on Legal paper. Users will be viewing it in the Interactive HTML format. We know they have to switch to PDF mode in order to print the report, but it looks as though the page size information isn’t being relayed to the PDF and the report comes up on the default page size for the PDF viewer, letter.

Is there any way to force Webi to pass the correct page size along to the PDF viewer? I hate to think our users are going to have to manually set the correct page size each and every time they go to print the report.

Not sure if what I’m experiencing is related - but when we have text and/or images (logos) in the header and you print it renders to pdf - this rendering causes cells to be truncated and overlap. Still haven’t found the answer but keep juggling cell height/width/location etc. It’s getting very ugly! :x

Hey Folks,

Just wanted to check if any of you guys figured this one out.

Thanks,
Arekh.

I believe I’ve figured out why your PDFs are being generated with the wrong page size.

There are three ways to generate a PDF with Webi XI R2.

  1. Set your viewer to be the PDF view format.
  2. “Save to my computer as” PDF from the Save button dropdown.
  3. Use the Print button next to the Save button.

1 and 2 will generate the PDF based on the Webi Page Size setting in the Page Layout properties.

3 makes you choose a page size and orientation. After hitting the Print button a dialog will appear with these choices. Unfortunately, these choices are defaulted and do not pick up on the Webi report’s properties.

For example, this will let you choose to generate letter size PDF pages from a Webi report with a page size of 11x17. Safe to say the PDF would look a little strange.

Just develop the habit of only using the Save button dropdown to generate a PDF to print.

I am also looking for a solution. Our global reports are set to A4 page size and don’t print properly here in the US using Letter size. Currently when printing from the PDF view my users have to enter their printer properties and set the original size to A4 and the Output Size to Letter and let it shrink to fit.

Is there a way for a document to automatically shrink to fit or ‘resize’ based on a prompt or default setting?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi there,

I attempted what you suggest, ie set PDF-view as defaults Webi document view method, but when attempting to print, Webi does not relay paper size (in this case legal size paper) to Acrobat Reader.

Any other suggestions?

pleximax, your using PDF view and it does not match the Webi reports chosen paper size? Thats strange, I haven’t experienced that happening. I suggest you place a case with Business Objects support.

Hi there,

Everything else matches, if I select Legal paper i Webi, I see Legal paper in PDF view, but when printing, it selects Letter as default. I would have liked PDF to choose whatever paper that I am viewing on screen. I guess its more of Acrobat issue than a BO/Webi issue?

thanks,

Exactly same problem as others have reported here…

FYI, Using Acrobat 6.0 (corporate won’t upgrade just yet).
Printers are Xerox WorkCenter Pro C3545 PS. Haven’t ruled out if the issue could be acrobat version related, or printer driver related.

No matter which option I choose, the PDF file defaults to ‘letter’ size and the user has to reselect thier page size.

The sad part with our users at the moment, is this is a do or die kind of thing for them. They already aren’t happy that a one-click print isn’t available and if they are forced to select paper sizes etc… we’re going to be forced to move away from Web intelligence and go back to static crystal reports and a web viewer.

If anyone has a solution, Please post a link or ideas.

Interesting, we’re experiencing almost the same thing. Our “solution” was to open reports by default in PDF, hence having the print button ready there (allthough paper size is not passed on). On the flip side, those user wanting to perform drilling, analysis or change or report will have to press the extra button (html view or edit).

Was a solution ever found for this?

I never found a solution to pass correct page size from Webi to PDF Print. As mentioned, I suspect that this may be more of an Acrobat or a printer driver issue than a BO issue.

If the PDF is showing the correct paper size (the same one chosen in Webi) then you should be able to print it on that size paper.

In the Adobe Acrobat print dialog, put a check in the box labeled “Choose Paper Source by PDF page size”. You may also want to change the “Page Scaling” setting to “None” as this seems to speed up printing.

Yes! I found this fix about a year ago, then forgot all about it (and this thread). I just ran across the problem again the other day, and stumbled around for a moment before finding the fix again.

I wish that was the default value - “Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size”. It’s going to be hard explaining this to end users . …

Steve:

I am experiencing the issue with WEBI report that is stored under Adobe format and the report extends upto the end of the right most page with header (images) in it.

When I edit the report using Adobe and add footer (pager number), it truncates the portion of report in the right side.

When I make the report smaller in size and add footer, it doesn’t truncate.

Any reason why the report portion get truncated …

BOE customer support doesn’t have any answer as its not tied to their product may be.

Thank You
Ramesh Vasudevan.

I use Adobe Reader version 9.0 and this seems to have cleared up a few printing issues. I have many reports that have 15 - 20 columns. To print these I choose Page Size of A2 with Landscape from Properties on the report. This works in most instances.

Hi

I have come across a strange issue in PDF.

When I save the webi report to PDF, the report measure values are giving flip output percentage values.

Ex. If in webi 65.9% whereas in PDF it is 9.65%

Thanks in advance.
