Open Source Tool

Hello,

Is there any open source tool available for ETL job or reporting purpose?

I guess for ETL, there is no open source tool available, but I had a discussion with my team and as per them there should be some open source tool present as an alternative for BO and ETL tool?

Please advise.

They’re both on that list, but if you want a shorter list to browse, my impression is these two are the market leaders:

Talend
Kettle (now Pentaho ETL)

I have used the latter on several real projects and know of its use at several other companies. The interface isn’t the fanciest, but it works great for our purposes of shuffling data between disparate formats.

Hi,

Check Pentaho (http://www.pentaho.com) and Jasper (http://www.jaspersoft.com).

Thanks to all for contribution.

I saw the links, but I have some questions like -

  1. Is there any open source tool which can replace BO? Actually our Head thinks there should be some tool which gives replacement for BO. But I think there is no such tool which can provide output as BO is providing.

  2. If I am using I guess I won’t be able to get any support for that tool like I am getting support for BO.

  3. What is the main reason of why we can’t/ or say we are not using open source tool.

The BO is integrated with our product. So in that context he is expecting some answer from me, but frankly speaking I have no idea how to link these things.

Could some one please help me in explaining me, so that I can try to explain to head after my understanding.

Masters feedback values a lot. And I have trust that I will get feedbacks on which only I am dependent. Once again thanks to all for contribution.

Usage of any tool is dependant on your requirements. You should investigate what the tool can do and whether it is suitable.

You should do the research on the tool examples, given above, also, maybe, consider looking at the Microsoft toolkit, Reporting, Analysis Services e.t.c, if you are looking for a cheaper option.

Guessing shouldn’t ever be part of your chosen technical solution, I’m sure, a few Google searches will yield what you require.

The answer to that is very simple, i.e. does it match your organisations requirements?

To be frank, we don’t either :).

You have been given a few ideas, now its up to you to do your job and find out whether you can / cannot use an open source solution as an alternative to BO.

With all due respect, you should never rely, soley, on an internet forum, however great this one is, to provide all the answers…

Open source is an interesting animal these days.

BOB, of course, is based entirely on OS products: I would venture to guess that Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (aka LAMP) is one of the most popular web “stacks” on the Internet today. Our board software from phpBB is also open source.

However, open source products are not necessarily free. You should understand that before doing your search. If you really want a free reporting solution, that’s what you look for. Open source means something completely different.

My most recent project, we moved from open-source to Business Objects. The low costs of open-source were obviously a huge lure, but in the end some crucial features were missing.

We tried Pentaho, Jasper, and BIRT, and all came up short in ad hoc reporting. Our users were “spoiled” by what you could do from products like MicroStrategy and BusObj. The key feature all the open-source tools were missing was a SQL writer: they can all do ad hoc reporting to a degree, but the domain of the question was always limited.

Basically, they all use something like a pre-compiled cube to source answers for ad hoc queries. If your users couldn’t figure out which one to use or had a novel question, you were in trouble. In addition, the ad hoc reports could never be very complicated - something like two tables next to each other or formatting for print was not possible.

If all you need from BO was Crystal Reports, I’ll bet the open source ones could work.
