Object type - Character vs LongText - use with aggregates

I have been using BO for over twenty years so may be remembering an old restriction, but I thought that objects of type LONG TEXT could not be used in a query if you had an aggregated object in the query too. However I have just tried it and it has not complained. I vaguely remember you used to get an error in query editor in InfoView saying this.

If this is not a restriction, then what is the difference between LONG TEXT and CHARACTER objects?

From what I remember, you had to cast a VARCHAR(MAX) as VARCHAR(2000), although you could reasonably extend that to VARCHAR(8000).
