Mixed Oracle middleware

I realize this topic has been covered before, and I’ve searched the archives extensively, but have not seen a definitive answer to the question: Can SQL*Net 2.3 and Net8 coexist on the same workstation? If so, how?

Our dilemma is that we have many different applications sitting on Oracle (some in v.7.x others in v.8.x) with their own front-ends (BO included). Some of the front-ends use SQL*Net, others use Net8. Of course, few (if any) of the application development teams coordinate the middleware piece. So, a user may have a new application installed on their desktop, which blows away the tnsnames, etc. of another application that was previously functioning just fine, thank you very much. But anyway…

Is there a version of Oracle (8?) that will allow sql*net & tnsnames to sit in the same directory? Is there anything else I’m missing? Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mind you this is just my understanding of what 8.15 does but…

When you install the new client for Oracle 8.15 it will install itself into a separate directory so that you can maintain your old 7.X and so forth for connecting to older databases. You should definitely check out the docs for the new 8.15 client but I’m 90% sure that’s what it does.
