Migration from XIr2 to Xir3.1

hi all
never did any migration this is first from BOXIR2 which in on linux machine to XIR3.1 which is on windows

my questions are
what things i need to take a note before migration?
i am planning to migrate by BIAR file is that right way to do that?
after the migration is done using the import wizard of xir3.1 what things i should check for whether whole migration is done successfully?
how long do you think this migration process will take?

Thanks in advance

BIAR files are NOT the right way to do this. You should be using the import wizard.

It takes a long time and depends on how much stuff is in your repository.

Other than that, the process is quite simple. We have lots of stuff and everything worked fine.

i thought Biar file was the right way.
what do you mean by using import wizard process?
is it means i need to login to the server which has XIR3.1 and in import wizard select source as XIR2 CMS and destination as XIR3.1 CMS?
is that how you mean?

Yes, that’s what I mean.

We did R3 a year ago. At the time, R3 couldn’t read a BIAR file created by R2.

so like… if R3.1 can read BIAR file created by R2 do you think it would be easy way?
can we create two different BIAR files like

  1. Users and Repository tables
  2. Universes and Reports etc

and run them one after the other? the reason iam asking is just to keep track of what i would be doing?

Right and wrong is very subjective.

We never use BIAR files for anything. The import wizard, took a while, but ti did everything for us.

On a separate note, I would take the opportunity to revisit your security model. R3.1 has added a number of additional levels of granular control, including some inheritance control. It also adds custom access levels, which basically let you save and reuse what were ā€œAdvancedā€ settings in R2. Both features are very nice. And, while your users are getting used to a new UI, it’s a good time to tighten up some restrictions that had gotten a little loose under R2.

Thanks Steve and Lugh

Another question

i have Users authentication configured in Xir2 with LDAP and in Xir3.1 with windowsAD

so when i migrate those users will they automatically migrate to the windows AD authenitication?
please advice

Um…

My advice at this point is to spend the money and get a consultant in there. If nothing else, it gives you a scapegoat if things go wrong.

While this should be possible, my gut is telling me you need to perform an extra step in there. Possibly adding an extra alias to each user. I don’t have a good idea of what the specifics would be. But, you may have stepped beyond the kind of questions you should rely on us for.

well thanks for the advice…
i dont really have many users probably i got only 60 users for migration and 6 universes and some 20 reports pretty small environment…

you mentioned possibly adding and extra alias to each user how can we do that?

arjunanand :us: (BOB member since 2007-08-30)

Off the top of my head? No idea. :nonod: I’d have to read through the Admin guide. Possibly hunt up some other documentation, and search through the net.

Of course, as small as your environment is, you could also just try it a bunch of times. Your imports shouldn’t take a great deal of time. Read the documentation, make some educated guesses, and run it in a test environment. If it fails, back it out to a clean install and try it a different way.

Then, come back here and let us know how it worked!

i would like to second lukh. while bo have done a ā€˜pretty good job’ when it comes to conversions (see 5.x crystal and so on) i recommend a professional service. somehow it does depend on numbers, not that they are the correct numbers:-) but how many unvs and reps you need to migrate. the conversion tool gives you a good idea about why you cannot convert report65 to reportx31. plenty of reasons, break limitations being just the start.
my advise for now: x number of unvs by nu,ber of reps and wiqs, number of users, groups, and now data secure options… see how this thread goes

So i did the migration from XIR2 to XIR3.1
i was able to migrate everthing except user accounts since they were in LDAP in R2
i got configured the LDAP in XI3.1 same as in XIR2
did another set of migration for users and groups
was able to migrate the user account

but when i try to login with the user account with LDAP

iam getting error

Cannot access repository (USR0013)

[repo_proxy 13] SessionFacade::openSessionLogon with user info has failed(LDAP Authentication could not log you on. Please make sure your logon information is correct. If your account is under any root other than dc=converge, dc=com you must enter your dn.(hr=#0x80042a01)

i didnt understand what is this "dn "
i thought configuring LDAP same as Source will automatically update the destination

any ideas for this error?

Thanks in advance

I was only able to configure LDAP-authentication after importing the users.

Our users use LDAP-authentication but we create also an Enterprise account for them which is disabled. This avoids users from disappearing if something is changed in LDAP. It is also nice for troubleshooting: we enable Enterprise verification for a user and do some tests.
