Migration and Upgradation

Hi,

1.Could anyone tell me whether it is possible to migrate/upgrdate from BO 5.5 to BO XI? What are the issues we will be facing?

2.Suppose Iam having lot of full client reports in BO5.1. Will it be possible to migrate or upgrate the full client reports from Bo 5.1 to Bo XI?

Thanks
Vikram

Hi Vikram,
You have to go a lot of steps in your migration. From 5.5 you have to convert the BO Reports to 6.5.Then only to XI.That to XI is only meant for Thin Client Not for FC.

You can’t migrate from a non-existant version. There was no version 5.5. However, you can migrate from version 5.1x directly to XIr2, once it is release, targeted for Q3.

There is a migration tool that will allow you automatically migrate your .rep files to .wid files. However, given the limitations of Web Intelligence, only the simplest .rep files can be successfully migrated at this time. Once XIr2 is released, these documents will migrate much more successfully.

I just can’t believe that by releasing XIr2, Business Objects will magically smooth out there complex migration path. It just sounds, to good to be true.

So there is no more full client, after 6.5. That is going to be a sad state of affairs; full client has always been there best product.

But, if what you say is true, we will be able to create our document is BO6.5 (or BO5.1.9 for that matter) and then ‘convert and publish’ then for XIr2 and thereby still using full client.

No, No, No. That’s not what I meant. There is no Full Client in XI, but it will be back in XIr2. Full client isn’t going away for quite some time. In XIr2, you will be able to continue using Full Client documents, or convert them to Web Intelligence documents.

Michael,

We are going to migrate from 6.1 (not a or b) to XI (it will be a new install). Your comment got me worried…

So in XI, there is no more bomain.key? Only the key from Webi Server? Would my Full Client reports still work? I mean the Webi (Unix based) did not allow the Webi reports to have multiple data sources (multiple universes in my case). Is that now available with XI? We have some reports that have as many as 15 data sources generating one report which was not supported in Webi reports.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Chirag,

XI is a completely different architecture from what you’re used to. There is no Supervisor, Administrator or BCA Console. All of those are combined in the CMC (Central Management Console). Multiple Data Providers are net yet possible in Web Intelligence, but will be in release 2, due out Q3 (probably September). I would not consider migrating to XI until then.

So I am correct in saying that XI currently has no desktop based reporting and it is fully web based only?

If not, is it possible to use XI desktop client and connect to webi server (which is possible in 6.1)

Thanks

Chirag,

Currently, the only desktop reporting tool in XI is Crystal Reports. So you have a choice between creating reports in CR or Web Intelligence. In release 2, you will also have BO Full Client as an option.

Hi all,

Ok if i am in xi and i have to create a new report with multi dataproviders how could i do ? no more BO FC ! no synchronised options under webi xi ! i have to use crystal ?

Regards

I did more investigation on this since we are planning to do upgrade as well.

What I found:

  1. No more Full Client in XI.
  2. You can use multiple data sources in BO Webi XI (called OLAP Intelligence?? I think) But these data sources are not synchronized, which means that you cannot join the multiple data sources.

If like us, you have many full client reports that use synchronized data sources, you may want to wait until XI release 2 comes out in Q3 (end Sept), but that may not be available until Q4 (Oct or Nov)

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. So what i understand is under xi you canoot create reports with multi synchronised dataproviders :!: :!: :!:

Wath’s a strange regression

Regards

That is correct. I am going to talk to a tech support person regarding this today to double check. If I find anything different, I will post it here.

Keep in mind that XI was designed for Crystal Enterprise users. Business Objects users were never expected to move to XI until release 2. You’re not losing the capability to have multiple, synchronized data providers. That capability exists in 6.5 Full Client, and will exist in XIr2 Full Client as well as XIr2 Web Intelligence.

In XI, Crystal Reports XI is the new reporting piece which replaces BO Full Client but not in function per function replacement. Is there a migration plan regarding BO FC Users to CRXI data sources? Does CRXI have a BOMain.key or does every new CRXI user have to create the same ODBC connection as the server? If that is the case, then does that mean we have to deal with Windows AD/NT vs named SQL users authentication?

Minh,

Crystal Reports is not intended to be a replacement for BO Full Client. In fact BO Full Client will be in XIr2, due out Q3. XI is the latest version of Crystal Enterprise. It includes Web Itenlligence as well as Designer.
