Migrate objects from BOE 4.1 to BOE 4.2 new install

Hi all,

SO here what I am needing todo. our current production enviroment is SAP BOE 4.1 sp4. We have a new system BOE 4.2sp3. We are needing to migrate access Levels, Groups, Folders, Reports, and Users ( Enterprise Users) and the users favorite folders content. In the old days we could use the Upgrade management tool.

Problem is UMT that comes with 4.2 is only designed to upgrade from 3.x to 4.2.

I have attempts to use promotion manager but there are thousands of objects and when you get more than a couple hundred object in it it tends to freeze. also when more than a couple dozen objects getting security to move is hard.

My question is the an easier way to migrate the Users Objects and Security from one system to the other. If I have to use the Promotion manager this is gong o take weeks to move everything and I think there will be things missed and Current Prod is a Live system.

BOE 4.1 sp4 Win 2008 r2 Orcle 12c
BOE 4.2 sp3 Win 2012r2 MSSQL 2014

I am using Promotion manger as we have only a mid size BI environment.

I am only moving around 50+ reports at a time. Also I am not migrating security to 4.2 SP03 environment, redefining it there.

hmm 50+ at a time would take forever, heck I’ve already moved over 1300+ user groups over. Wish the Upgrade management Tool would work for moving between 4.1 to 4.2.

Try increasing the memory on your APS. This will allow you to migrate more objects in one job. I’ve gone through this recently, and it worked fine, but I couldn’t do it all in one job. It took dozens of jobs to get it all done.

In the Idea page there is a post that mentions BI4.1 content can be exported to BIAR and then imported into a 4.2 system if the -internal_use_only_enablebiartolivetesting switch is used. I haven’t tried it myself, but it might help you.

Does the no_version_check(what ever the exact format is) switch still work on UMT in BO4.2?

I know it isn’t supported officially, but I never hit any problems with it between 4.x systems

No, it doesn’t. See the link I posted above.

Sorry joepeters I didn’t go into the link. Mea culpa.

I really do despair of the repeated failures by SAP to understand how their product is used, and their stubbornness in not accepting that the BO community might actually know more sometimes

Yes, that’s one area that has been significantly worse off since Business Objects was independent. The feedback loop isn’t what it used to be.

Connection Overrides come to mind…

Did you try to use LCM CLI tool? Perhaps this could help you to migrate your contents in a better way.

We are currently on 4.1 SP5 moving to 4.2 SP3. After discussion with our consultant, here is the approach we are using.

Installing 4.1 SP5 on the new hardware.
Using the internaluseonly_no_version_check switch in the UMT to move content.
Upgrading to 4.2 SP3 after the move.

Have no idea what we will do next time.

OK I notice you will be moving to a new Server…So I am in a similar boat. 4.1 SP6 on 2008 R2 Servers and going to 4.2 SP4 on 2012 R2 servers. We are moving to SP4 for the SQL Server 2016 compatibility.

So here is our plan.

  1. Update current Server to 4.1 SP9 This allows us to move the CMS and Audit DB’s to the new 2016 SQL Server.
  2. We install 4.1 SP9 onto the new 2012 server in Expanded mode which adds the new server to the cluster.
  3. We remove the 2008 server(s) from the Cluster and place the new server in control of the cluster.
  4. Install the 4.2 SP4 Upgrade on the 2012 Server

It is helping us as far as not needing to make a ton of BIAR files and we rely more on Server snapshots and CMS/Audit Backups…Currently we have just added our severs to the cluster and are testing and optimizing the settings.

It sounds like you have already installed 4.2 on your new machine…So this may not help you much… Sorry if that is the case…

You can have a look to Version Manager if you want to avoid headache each time you upgrade.
