I know that it is possible to update the repository database directly in v5 in order to do a mass update to descriptions or to hide objects in a universe.
Is this also possible in XI, and if so how could it be done?

This does not modify the repository rather it uses the desgner object model to change the descriptions, probably a safer approach.
