Linked Queries

Does anyone know how to select dimension variables from query 2 after the queries are linked for reporting? It seems that only dimension variables from query 1 and measures from both queries are available for selection. The dimension variables from query 2 are greyed out. Your help would be most appreciated.

The only objects available from query 2 will be:

a) Dimensions linked to an equivalent dimension from query 1 b) Detail objects
c) Measure objects

Dimension objects that are not linked are not available. Dimension objects are assumed to be “keys”, and if you do not link (join) all of the key files you can end up with invalid combinations of data.

If your dimension objects should have been defined in Designer as detail objects, then you can create a new variable in your document and reclassify the information as a detail. At that point it is available. However, you have to understand your data and be sure that this is - in fact - a valid operation.

To redefine a dimension as a detail:

  1. build a new variable named Object Detail (or something) 2) set the variable type to Detail, and associate the new variable with one of the linked dimensions
  2. build the formula as = , where refers to the original dimension.

Again, you have to be careful that this results in a valid result. If the object was a key field and was not linked, unpredictable results can occur.
