learning to use the IDT

Hello World,
for 16 years, i have used the BO Universe Design Tool. Now i need to build new universes with the Information Design Tool.
At the moment i have many questions that can not be solved with the manual.

  • is it possible to connect different data bases as basis for a business layer?
(Databasis from migratet Unv1 and Databasis from unv2)
  • is it possible to reuse Objects (dim …) from a Businesslayer in another Buisnesslayer? (one Database but n-Bussinesslayer (with a number of objects) for other Usergroups)
  • in XI, Universes could be linked to another universes, how to create objects that can be reused in different places?
  • How should I proceed in principle? A project and n-Data/Business layer or prefer a project for any requirement?

… there are so many questions, hope there are also a few answers

Sorry for the bad english, i work on it and thanks for your help

Haven’t yet started looking at it myself, however, these look good and may help you :).

Thanks for the link, the tutorial is very good for the beginning

But I miss practice recommendations.

  • Should I continue to look at each universe for itself or is it better to build a “great” master (data foundation layer) with n-Connections?
  • How should I deal with things like a date dimension when I can not link any universes anymore? (I have more than 50 universes and do not want to build in any classes with Date-Dim objects and filters.)

…I hope there is an acceptable solution

Linked universes is there from 4.2 SP3.

The beginning is where you are currently, I would work out how it all works first and then go from there.

Surely, that depends on what you are trying to achieve.
One persons “good practice” may not work in your particular scenario.

You should think about future maintenance, the way you plan to deliver the projects, number of developers you have working on each project etc.
I suggest doing some more research and coming up with a series of best practices to suit your particular needs.
