Does anyone out there know what an External Join is?
When joining a table or sql command object from one data source to a table in a different data source within a Data Foundation, the SQL generated for a Report seems to do an External Join.
One of our developers is seeing this as well and does not know what it means. He has been handing me his SQL to validate, but I don’t know what “external join” means. The original post was back in 2006 that did not generate a reply. I hope someone has an explaination.
In the book “The Complete Reference - Crystal Reports 2008” by George Peck, it says:
If you have added tables from more than one database type to your report, the SQL Query dialog box will show queries for all database types, including “External Link” notations. The reference to an External Link indicates that Crystal Reports will perform the link locally after all queries have processed on their respective database servers.
What? Read a manual? Makes sense. It is a notational comment in Crystal about some behavior it will perform. Nothing for me as I attempt to validate individual SQL statements. I appreciate the clear description.
Yes, read a manual… at least pretend to read one while you “space out”. I found that burying your head in a manual results in being left alone, little do others know that your mind is elsewhere (especially when you have almost 24hrs of daylight, like we do up here).
PS: Mind you, not that I would ever do such a thing… .LOL
