Java Support for 1.4 and 1.5 discontinued????

Hi all
Recently we received a letter from SUN saying that the support for Java 1.4 had been discontinued in Oct 2008 and as of Nov 2009 support for 1.5 will be discontinued.
Currently we are using BO XIR2 SP3 with JDK 1.4.

This information has led to a few frazzled brains this side as we have a rather large deployment. I have read in a few places that 1.6 is not supported with XIR2 but if I look at the Supported platforms documents for XIR2 or even XIR3 it mentions JDK1.5.

Can anyone please shed some light on this matter? Is there a difference between Java 1.4 and JDK 1.4 or am I missing the boat??
As far as i can see BO XIR2 is supported till 2011 and I wouldn’t have thought the java version would be an issue???

I would love to upgrade to XIR3 but need to have the right information to give to the decision makers

many thanks,

How many times have you contacted Sun with questions about your Java install? If the answer is - as I suspect - zero, then it really doesn’t matter if support is dropped, does it?

That’s what I said when this all came up - but the people here are having a fit about being on an unsupported version.

OK, I’ll just play it by ear
Maybe it’d be a good excuse to go to XIR3 !!!

Thanks

What does “unsupported” mean for Sun anyway? It probably means no patches or bug fixes. At that point, I would expect SAP to be on the hook for fixing their own application. Of course they’re likely to ask you to upgrade, but since SAP has a much longer support horizon (meaning their products are on the support list for far longer than Business Objects seemed to do) I think you would be safe.

Just my opinion.
