IPS version -v- DS version, multi job servers

It is really difficult to get an answer on the SAP support or find it in there documentation, it is also very frustrating waiting on SAP Support to respond to a ticket that’s been raised especially when one has a high level architecture meeting to attend in which the environment is to be scoped and planned. Therefore this site being my favourite trusted site I will pose my questions here knowing that I will get a quicker response.

First question is that SAP have released the following updates;
Data Services 4.2 SP 8
IPS 4_1_SP8
IPS 4_2_SP3
Which IPS should I install against DS 4.2 SP8?

Second lot of questions may require an answer or an opinion from your good selves.

We plan on having 4 job servers to deal with the load. Job server 1 will house the IPS in which we will manage all other job servers. Each job server will be configured so that any of our user repositories (we have 20+) can run any data extract from any of the user repositories in the event that a job server goes down. We just run it manually on another job server. Thus if “Macroman” repo runs extracts on Job server 2, job server 2 fails, we just log onto the Management Console and run it manually on job server 3, or we fire up the client Data Services and run it that way.

However, what if a scenario exists in which job server 1 fails?

I know we cannot log onto Data Services because it houses the IPS in which we authenticate, the extracts scheduled on the other job servers will still run. But we won’t be able to manage them as we have no IPS due to job server 1 failed which has IPS and the Management Console within Tomcat. Of course we just reboot the server but if there is a major problem and we are unable to recover job server 1 we are in a sticky situation.

So for the questions around the above scenario.

  1. Is it possible to still manage a data extract on the other job servers?
  2. Is it possible to install a Tomcat Management Console on other job servers just to manage data extracts? The answer is probably no due to having no IPS to authenticate against.
  3. Any other way to manage data extracts without an IPS?

I do not want to install IPS on each of the job servers, it will be a massive overhead in maintaining and each will require a default user repository.

many thanks for your time

Hi,

In the PAM there is a compatibility matrix between IPD and DS, DS 4.2 SP8 is supported by BI/IPS 4.1 SP8, BI/IPS 4.2 SP2, BI/IPS 4.2 SP3.

Hope this help

While the PAM contains high level compatibility requirements, you will need to check this SAP note for a detailed overview of what versions of BO/IPS are compatible with what versions of DS/IS - this goes down to patch level:

1740516 - SAP Data Services 4.x and SAP Information
Steward 4.x compatibility with SAP Business Intelligence
Platform and Information Platform Services for active releases

Link: https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/notes/1740516

SAP continuously updates this note so keep checking it whenever new patches and/or Service Packs are released.

You will need an S-ID to access that SAP note I believe.
