Import/Export Universe Question

We have two universe domains established as follows:

Devl_Universe and Prod_Universe

We wish to promote universes from Devl_Universe to Prod_Universe by simply importing from devl_universe and then exporting to Prod_Universe. This operation currently is not permitted by BO as it warns “The file name (my_universe) and the universe name (my_universe) already exist in the Prod_Universe domain. Change the file name and universe name to export it.”

I presume that this is standard repository behavior and not a configuration issue created by our General Supervisor, is that correct? Is the only way to do a promotion from one universe to another by deleting the universe from the target universe prior to exporting to it?

Thanks in advance,

Donald,

Hi!! We have three domains here: Development, Testing and Production. When I am ready to promote a universe from Development domain to Testing domain for example, I simply open the universe in Designer, choose export and choose the appropriate domain. Designer will ask me if I want to replace it if there is already a copy in the domain, but I certainly don’t have to rename it.

There is a ‘Prevent from overwriting universe’ option in the Supervisor module. Therefore, your supervisor may not allow you to overwrite an existing universe. This sounds like your problem.

There is a setting in Supervisor that disallows overwriting of universes with the same name. This can be switched off by you supervisor, however he/she may have reasons for leaving the parameter as is.

Donald:

If you ever did a “save as…” operation on your universe, then it got assigned a new Universe ID. Then, at some point, if you renamed the file or did another “save as…” to get back to the original name, it still has a different Universe ID.

What the export process is complaining about is that you have two universes (one in the repository, one on your local drive) that have the same name but different ID’s. That is why you are required to delete the entry in the repository prior to exporting your other copy.

I’m not sure I understand the context of your response. Neither a “rename” of the file nor a “save as” of the universe has occurred on the universe in question.

The process I wish to implement for universe development and production release is as follows:

Create initial universe and save one to many times in Devl_Universe universe domian. (works fine)
Initial release of universe to Prod_Universe universe domain. (works fine)
Enhancement required to universe: performed on Devl_Universe version and exported back (works fine)
Subsequent release of universe to Prod_Universe universe domain (fails with error reported earlier).

Hopefully this helps.

A prior reply pointed to a Configuration option for the Designer Module within Supervisor called “Prevent from overwriting Universe”. I have not gotten that option to work as I had hoped.

Thanks again.

In the Designer commands section there is a setting “prevent from overwriting universe”. This should be set to “disabled” to allow overwriting of an existing universe. The documentation is in
Appendix
A of the supervisor manual.
on page 170 in my version.

Hope this helps,

Donald,

BO Version 4.1 identifies universe with name and ID. First time exports are allowed but next time when you try to export it detects a universe with the same id in the domain. To overcome it it is suggested that the General Supervisor set the option in the Supervisor module to “work with universe Overides”. To do this you log into the Supervisor module, click on TOOLS menu and then choose OPTION and General supervisor tab. Check mark "work with universe overides " option. This should prompt you overwrite the existing universe.

As a word of caution it is not recommended to delete an universe unless you are absolutely sure you are not going to use it because you will lose the id in the repository and this can be a major problem especially if you have linked universe.

There is a setting in the Supervisor for the commands available for the Designers - by default it does not allow overwriting.
