How would you want an end user to ask this ?

Hi,

I hope I am in the right place.

Essentially, how would you want an end user - someone using webi to request more access / space on the servers so I can run bigger reports and faster ?

Also I would also really like them to change their default log off time for Webi users too.

Just in case you are wondering why I am asking…

Here is the situation

  • I have tried being nice and sending emails that seemed to get blocked at the help desk , ( its not a situation that I can walk over with some freshly baked cookies either - otherwise I would have tried that)
    I have tried requesting the above info to which I get a phone call saying it set at the company standard ( which I can’t find anywhere) and when I try to ask a question about changing it, they say they can’t and hang up.
    I have even tried my boss to their boss ( however then it becomes non technical to non technical and a promise of help that never comes ) -
    we all work for the same company so no one is getting fired over this…

I can’t / wont accept the original advice from their help desk just do it all in excel ( firstly we have webi and business objects for a reason and because that was done before by my area with almost disastrous results). That’s why the company has business objects - and I want the information to be refreshable and linked to the central data … I freely admit I am a subject area specialist and not a business object specialist, I learn the program that is in use.

I don’t know when I look at the files in Rich client they show a size of 2MB at max ( I don’t know if that is considered big data - it doesn’t feel that way - yes I had to do a lot of calculations and formulae at the report side but that was because the data wasn’t working otherwise… I have proposed new objects in the universe that would clean up these issues but they just send back - we are not editing the universe - I have even suggested a new universe - following the design layouts I have found online and how that data can be extracted from existing data sources of the company and I never hear back, even have pointed out that they might want to change the name of a pre-written measure variables - which re being used across the company by multiple user in written reports incorrectly they won’t change the variable, let me know the actual equation behind it ( I have guessed at by running it enough times and getting inaccurate counts to figure out what it is picking up) they won’t even update the description on that object or a universe description although the years it refers to is clearly out of date ( if you only occasionally use business objects you would select the wrong universe and I have had to correct reports presented in my area because of this ie I work enough with it to spot that error quickly)

I know everyone is overworked and underpaid - but these don’t to me seem like massive requests ( I could be wrong)

but I can’t help feeling I am asking the wrong questions / or asking the wrong way or to the wrong ppl - because it seems that the above information regarding settings and access to servers would be easily retrieved from the CMC panel … and if they wanted they could change my setting (without changing anyone else’s - well from my research - but I freely admit I could be completely wrong and completely pissing them off)

Hence why I am asking for assistance from system admin ppl… ( and I hope I am asking this help from the right group of ppl)

Seems like they should be fired, seriously. Is this function outsourced, by any chance?
The sort of IT service (key word that, as without the business paying you, you would not exist) you are getting went out with flared trousers in the 70’s :rotf: .

2MB is quite large, but this will because of the amount of data contained within. Usually this is becuse the data is not modelled correctly for reporting.
Please note that reports can get “bloated” over time (kind of corrupted) usually this can be resolved by puging all data and saving as a different file name.
If variables are being used in a number of places, of course they should be created in the universe this allows them to be reused.

I can confirm none are big requests that will take much time.
Some CMC settings can be set up at a user / group level and some can’t. I believe the timeout issue falls into the “can’t category”.

If you really want to sort these issues out, I suggest your boss escalates it to a higher level than his horizontal line, so a few butts start getting kicked.

Thanks for the response and confirming things for me. It really helps to know these things .

And I will take your advice and get my boss to escalate it again.

Unfortunately, we do all work for the same company, there is no outsourcing… although I am so tempted to ask my boss to buy me a server and “lend” me a local IT guy ( who are brilliant - but don’t work with business objects or that side of the “IT” bit of the company… (its weird and political and …:reallymad: & :hb: )to work with me on setting up our own clone system…
