How to create a copy of a universe

Hey,

I am fairly new to business objects. I have recently got a project where in i have a report which is fetching wrong data values. I went through the report and the universe associated with it. I found that there is no data being fetched from the data provider for that report.

However i tried to make a copy of the report and the universe and try to work on them instead of the original to avoid problems for other reports. I made a copy, however when i try to export it to the rep so that my new copy of report would be associated to it. I was getting the same original universe.

Please let me know how to make a copy of a universe with everything included (i mean even the errors) so that i can work on that universe, check with the report and then implement the same on the original one.

Thanks,
Neil

You have to go to the File Menu --> Save As --> give a new name. If you want to use this new universe, then do this:
– Save it with a new name
– Export it to the repository CMS folder or your repository domain
– Go to the report and change the universe for each data provider in your report and then dig into the issue.

hi,
so as per my understanding you already created the copy of the universe.
so now when u open your report, click on edit query. on the left hand side u will see data tab and properties tab if u click on properties tab u will see second option for universe if u click on the button next to universe u will get a list of all available universe,so u can select the new universe from that list.and yr reports will run out of that universe.

i hope this helps.

make a copy the universe by doing the Save As on original universe and give a seperate name for the copid Universe. This copy will happen in your local machine. Then open the duplicate univeres and go to parameters and change the name in Definition tab also. If you not changing the name in Parameters, then you will see the universe name with original univ name. After that export the universe to the repository then start play with your report.

I did try this. However the previous universe shows up and the new one, when exported to the repo, tells me if it wants to be overwritten…

To narrow it down I am not able to do a copy of the universe in the same repo…and hence can’t point the report’s DP to that universe.

I hope i was clear.

Thanks,
Neil.

Yeah true…I was hoping to do this…however the new universe never shows up…because when i try to export the copy into repo, It shows a msg saying universe will be overwritten…though the name is different… Is it to do with the fact that the objects id’s are same and it treats both as same… :hb:

ohh…Thanks…This would be the reason it shows up original universe always…Thank you so much…now i can atleast start working on it…

As an aside, you dont have to export the copied universe to repository in order to fix any problem(though applies to only full client reports).
The universe can as well be saved locally in a different folder and report pointed to it.

Hey Haider,

I tried that option however the locally saved report does not give me an option to point to any other universe other than the ones in repo.

You dont have to rename the universe for working on it locally
Just import the repository universe into a different folder on your c: drive.
In DeskI point the universes from tools-options-file locations to this folder, make changes to universe and check reports.

That’s good for DeskI, but what about WEBI? Does anyone know how to point to a local disk universe from a WEBI report?

…errr export it to the repository? Maybe you can use Rich Client like Deski in this respect…I don’t know, but straight WebI I think you are out of luck.

Yes, I was afraid that would be the answer. I currently can’t export the test universe to the repository; hence my question.
Thanks for your reply.

Something in that does not make sense to me - can you walk thru your workflow? You should be able to take the universe, change its description, do a “Save as” to another name, and then export it. If you’re getting a “file exists” error, something is not right - the new name does not exist in the repository, too, does it?

Don’t give up!

Under normal circumstances you are correct. It’s just an environmental security issue I have with the powers that be. It’s a temporary situation and will be resolved, so not to worry. I was just looking for an interim solution.
Thanks, Ron
