how can we say that BO is an Rolap? and why can’t be a molap ? someone plz help me in this explanation…

my 10 cents: BO is no MOLAP, no ROLAP and no HOLAP

BO is a front end reporting tool which can report on MOLAP/ROLAP, you can either use a relational database (sql server, oracle etc) or an olap environment like analysis server (in the new environment any olap which talks XMLA as far as I know). MOLAP and ROLAP are about how you store data, and BO doesn’t store data (well, the end-report can hold data).

But I believe there is something called micro cube in BO where it organises the data. Does anyone know how this micro cube organises / stores the data? Architecture of micro cube?

Hi,

I would say that BO can be called DOLAP (Desktop OLAP) as BO stores data extacted from the database in its own microcube that is the part of the REP file - it means on the desktop.

maybe!!! but how does it organise the data?

I do not know whether BO has ever revealed its technology - the architecture of BO microcube.

Why is that so important to you :?: Do you have any specific problem with storing data in BO rep file?

yes we do came over issues and in our research we found that it has something to do with the way it organises the data in the cube. Webi disabled custom sort on a dimension when we had 2 queries from the same universe in same webi doc. my impression is it creates different cube for each query (data provider) and somehow merges the similar dimensions but not sure. so curious if any gurus could tell about micro cube’s architechture. Appreciate it.

could some gurus throw some light on this. Appreciate your valuable response.

Maybe no one else has an opinion, or really cares about it. Why do you care so much?

I am trying to underrstand micro cube architecture so that some of our questions (i talked about couple of them in my previous post) can be answered.

From some documentation I’ve read before, BO calls its own technology SOLAP: Simple OLAP. The fact that you can perform multi-dimensional analysis means that that is some form of OLAP at work. With SOLAP, (as with ROLAP with a difference in degrees) you trade off performance for flexibility/price: with a single tool, you can get functionality of an OLAP database and analysis tool AND also do some traditional reporting. (Now I’m starting to sound like sales.)

BO’s microcubes are dynamically assembled based on the query performed. In contrast to MOLAP which requires the cube to be built up and populated with data, which requires some special tools and/or technical knowledge, BO microcubes are built on the fly, and the required input is the person creating the query, which can be a non-technical user.

Of course, the Universe needs to be designed first; however, the Universe itself is not the microcube, simply the foundation from which a multitude of queries and microcubes can be created.

This is my $0.02. How it is accomplished technically, I haven’t the slightest except a suspicion that legions of very pointy eggheads were involved.
