How do I export a report to excel ? Not using the view then export option, because the detail contains too many records. I want the summarized report exported to excel. Your input would be appreciated.
You can go to the summarized report and then hit File…Save As… and save it as a text file and then open in Excel.

Angela,
You can do a copy all and paste into Excel. You lose formating but it keeps the columns and rows for you.

You can also export with copy-paste, by choosing Edit|Copy All, which preserves the local aggregations and calculations.

Although I prefer the copy all -> past solution best, there is another way. You can save a report as HTML and then open it up with Excel 97. I know this is not ideal, but I thought I’d share it anyway.

If you have a lot of data to copy, Using >>File>>Save As .txt will work better.
Also, as a note, if you do all your formatting of data in BusinessObjects, you can essentially have your layout complete when you open up the .txt file in excel. All the data must be in the same block (tabular or Crosstab). The top left cell in the block will be converted to cell A1 (if there isn’t any free form cells above the block). The rest of the cells in the table will flow accordingly. ed

I am sorry this has probably been asked before. If you try and export an object to Excel that has a special character in the name, the export fails. However I thought BusinessObjects had done something to get around this problem - like renaming the columns in the spreadsheet to use underscores for all special characters. I am using 4.1.3. Does anyone know anything about this? Am I all wet?

When exporting to Excel a data provider with special characters like # in the column name, you may get a syntax error in the field definition. There are no longer any problems with the following special characters: #, ., /, , ', _, (, ), {, }, +, ", $. They are changed to - (under line).

Hi,
If you don’t want to use macro for this then you may want to take a look at the Business Query product of BO, it is an add-in for excel and can be used to generate reports with the BO format and then the data can be used in excel.
Hope this helps…
Thanks

Right now if you export to Excel you get just a plain list of column. Is there a way that you can have the data in Excel formatted such as the report
looks without writing a MACRO.

From the menu select edit, and then copy all, Paste into Excel, it should
keep the report format.
Hope this helps

This probably an ugly solution, but it works, somewhat. What I do is File-Save As HTML, then open the report in my browser. Press Ctrl-A to select all. Then CTRL-C to copy. Then I go to Excel and paste. The format doesn’t copy perfectly, but it does retain much of the formatting. I hope this helps.

Paste and copy from HTML file does not work well for large reports.
There is a company out there that offers an enhancement to webi (forgot the name…anyone else remember?); their product installs on the webi server and adds a button “Save as Excel spreadsheet” preserving the format of the original report) to WEBi.
Andreas:
You shouldn’t have to do a copy and past from the HTML file. You should be able to open the HTML file in Excel. Open Excel, then open the HTML file from Excel. This should retain all the formatting but you will have to unmerge some cells to work with the file.
