Experience of LiveOffice - is it a viable product?

Hi

I am looking for people who have successfully implemented LiveOffice that can give me an opinion of the product. I have been requested to create a solution for a company that I believe could include LiveOffice but at first usage there seem to be quite a few issues that I am not sure will make it a viable solution.

Challenge: There is a HUGE monthly report that gets created, 80% of the information comes from a BO source but the poor person creating the report spends about 2 weeks a month collating information, entering it in Excel, graphing it and then putting it in Word/PDF for distribution to Management.

Solution: Create this in Word with LiveOffice links to BO report parts (WebI) and then the process is streamlined, Excel is removed and the report is distributable. The time taken to produce the report is negligable and the person involved could be freed up for other work.

Concerns: I have been playing with it a little bit and among other things it:

  1. Loses connection to the underlying CMS very easily.
  2. hangs when refreshing an existing repport.
  3. Takes VERY long to refresh a report that takes 3 seconds in WebI.

I am using XIR2 SPP3 with MS Office 7. I am not sure that Office 2007 is supported (I would guess not), can I use it anyway or is this my main problem?

Should I upgrade to XIR3 (BO’s normal solution to anything :D) or is that not going to help me that much?

Does anyone have any advice or experiences they can share please?
Many thanks

We use live office for the same purpose and we like it.

Refreshing reports is not a good idea as it refrehses each component independently. However, it works fine with scheduled reports.

If you are having disconnect problems, you probably are having those with WebI as well.

Thanks Steve, good to know!!
Anybody else want to add anything??

Yes, for dynamic refreshing of data Live Office is better one, because the users can do changes as they like. (on Demand reports)

You can do it for Single report (tab) and for whole document.

Charts are not that much good as in BO. :frowning:

Thanks

Personally, I like it :).

I have found it works better with instances, as Steve suggested.

You can just really use it as a data feed and then do all the charts in Excel.

Best advice I can offer, especially with the XIr2 flavour is to not mess around with the Webi report once you had linked to it in Live Office, objects tended to lose their linkage!

I think 2007 is supported in a greater XIr2 service pack, than yours.

OK so the scenario is:
Big word document done on a monthly basis.
I have all the reports created now I just need to fit them into the relavant place in the report.
Two questions:

  1. I am having some issues with graph formatting. Can I use Live Office to create the graph in Excel and then put it in the Word Document - seems a bit of a long way round??
  2. Does anyone know if there are plans to make Live Office work with MS Publisher??
    Thanks

Maybe its a long way round, but can be advantageous if users are used to seeing Excel charts.
This will also make it easier to maintain the LO doc, as I said I have had problems with objects becoming unlinked, formatting issues e.t.c.

However, all said and done once finished it works for me…

As for question 2, I have no idea…

Hi,
Not sure if I’m being dim or if it’s to do with Word 2007 …
If I put a WebI chart into Excel, with LiveOffice, how do I get it to Word with a Link?
I am presuming then that the Excel document has to be refreshed first and then the Word doc.
:hb:
The funniest part is I phoned SAP here in Australia and the chap I EVENTUALLY got hold of told me he couldn’t help me because LiveOffice is a Microsoft product not a BusinessObjects product! The level of support is not encouraging :frowning:

Hi Sarah,

I have never done this sort of double linkage and I’m unsure whether it will work?
You may be able to do what you described, I can’t see any other way it would work otherwise.

Oh dear

yeah the SAP support leaves alot to be desired.

Hi all, I found a solution for my problem that doesn’t involve Excel.

All I do is place a single cell table in Word, place the chart in the table and then I can move it around at will and no links get lost or broken. I’m convinced this is a bug in LiveOffice but am not holding my breath for it ever to be fixed.

Thanks everyone for help and comments,
