i have two reports doing this now. these reports have been in production for over a year and external customers started getting this error.
i have reloaded the reports from a master copy thinking the reports got currupted. but no luck.
anybody have any ideas? the report will run just fine when i preview it with the CMC.

Once restart the crystal report page server and crystal report cache server and make sure all the servers enable in central configuration manager.
First do this and test it. If you still getting the same problem we need to expect the ideas from Crystal experts.

Meher - Any fix for this issue as we are experiencing the same on some reports in XI 3.1 InfoView?
Thanks.

Does it fail on all Crystal Reports viewers? DHTML, ActiveX, Java etc…
ABILtd (BOB member since 2006-02-08)
DHTML error: Encapsulating Page Error
ActiveX and Java: Error in File [report name] Failed to retrieve data from the database.
Errors in ActiveX and Java were more meaningful and I was able to relate the issue to an incorrect data source on the server. Issue resolved.
Thanks!

Install Crystal Reports designer on the BOXI server and test it there…

Has anyone found a fix to this error yet??
We are having the same problem (getting error: “Error in File XXX: Encapsulating page failed” when trying to view & refresh a Crystal report in XI 3.1 (Windows)).

Check the data source for the reports and confirm they exist and the connections work. In my case it was an issue with the connection and was visible when I changed the report viewer:
DHTML error: Encapsulating Page Error
ActiveX and Java: Error in File [report name] Failed to retrieve data from the database.

Farhan,
I believe we have this issue with SP4. Our problem seems to be intermittent though.
When you say data source, what exactly did you check on your server? Can you be more specific please?
Our reports are based off an XML & Oracle data provider. We’re all your reports failing or specific ones? All our reports work, except larger volumes of data where we receive this error message.
Any help would be great.
Cheers,
Lloyd.

I am experiencing this same issue right now. The confusing thing is that the reports will run sometimes and not run other times. It seems to be completely random, which would seem to rule out an incorrect connection to the DB. It either can connect or it can’t, right?

Brother Farhan
How did u check to see if the connection works???

smha, please do not bump your post until at least one business day has passed.

sorry nick…i didnt know that but my issue is resolved i m just putting on if it helps anyone else…my report was against universe and the issue is with connection permission for ur universe. We had the same issue in Dev and after granting view on demand access to universe connection in Dev, everyone is able to run the report now.
smha (BOB member since 2010-03-10)
In future if anybody gets this issue then please save as the report in another place/folder and run from infoview as there was some problem in exporting reports some times because of server busy. I got the same problem and solved with this method…

I got this error when i changed the Database Configuration for the crystal report.
Then when i double-click or view latest instance i see this error .
This happens because your old report is still pointing to the old database config.
So, you will need to click on View instead of view latest instance on the crystal report.
and when you schedule this report the next time and then view latest instance you wont have this error.

What we’ve noticed is that the encapsulating page failed error is a generic error that usually indicates something wrong with the underlying code or source data of the report rather than an issue with Business Objects.
When we open the offending report in Crystal designer and try to run it, it will usually give a more detailed error that pinpoints where the error might come from within the database or code.

ActiveX and Java error is more meaningful, I was the problem of incorrect data source and on the server. Solve the problem.

This issue could be linked to many aspects (generic error message).
In our case we just didn’t have read rights to the required database table.
A SQL Profiler trace showed the real root cause.
